Paul Douglas Barnhardt, 66, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, July 10, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication and service that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. Doug was born on April 18, 1959 in Alamance County to the late Charles Elbert Barnhardt and Billie Sue Miles.
Doug devoted 44 years to Piedmont Natural Gas, where his commitment to hard work and integrity was admired by his coworkers and friends alike. He also served his community as a volunteer for 14 years with the Graham Auxiliary Police Department, where he rose to Chief, demonstrating his unwavering passion for public service. As a distinguished member of the Burlington Police Club and the Rotary Breakfast Club, Doug fostered friendships that enriched his life and the lives of others. His heart was full of love for his family, and he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Doug treasured moments spent outdoors, finding joy in deep sea fishing and surf fishing alongside his sons and friends. He loved spending time at Tuckertown Lake and Oak Island with his family, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Whether hunting or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, Doug enjoyed sharing these experiences with those he loved.
A member of St. Marks Church, Doug was a man of faith, who lived his life with kindness and compassion. His presence in this world may have come to an end, but the impact he made on the lives of others will remain, forever in the hearts of his family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted sons, Brantley Barnhardt and his wife Paige, and Weston Barnhardt and his wife Laura; his grandchildren that he adored, Charlotte and Bryce Barnhardt; his brothers, Charles Barnhardt and his wife Catherine, and Harold Barnhardt and his wife Joni; sisters-in-law, Karen O. Garrison and husband Ronald, and Helen O. Triplett; brother-in-law, Kerney Edgar “Tray” Overman III and his wife Lisa; and several nieces and nephews.
Doug has now been reunited with his parents, his cherished wife of 43 years, Kay Overman Barnhardt, who left this world in May 2023. They shared a profound bond that was evident in their love and devotion to one another. He is also reunited with his canine companion, Shadow, who brought comfort and companionship during his life.
