DR. PAUL BATTIES Obituary
Paul Terry Batties, M.D. was born July 22, 1941, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Paul A. Batties, a physician, and Louise Terry Batties, an educator and civic leader. Paul Terry was baptized at a young age and was a lifelong member of University United Methodist Church of Indianapolis.
Paul Terry was an honor pupil throughout his attendance at Indianapolis Public Schools. He attended IPS #87 and was a Spelling Bee Champion. Paul Terry attained membership in the National Honor Society at Shortridge. He graduated from Shortridge High School at the young age of 16. He played trumpet in the band at Shortridge and later was in the Marching 100 at Indiana University. He graduated from Indiana University in 1961. While an undergraduate student at Indiana University, he was initiated into the Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. of which he became a life member. Paul Terry graduated from the School of Medicine, Indiana University in 1965. The next four years of his medical career were spent at Receiving Hospital, Wayne-State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he completed his rotating internship and residency in the "specialty" of internal medicine. Dr. Batties was licensed to practice medicine in four states: Michigan, Indiana, California, and Kentucky.
Paul Terry enjoyed broad popularity among his colleagues and friends in Detroit, and in his own hometown, Indianapolis, and in various parts of the country where "The Batties Family" traveled extensively. In 1969, Paul Terry was married to Pat Hubbard of Detroit. Among his favorite summer spots as a youth was swimming at Fox Lake, and vacationing in Martha's Vineyard.
We are thankful for Paul Terry's service as a Veteran in the Air Force and Vietnam War. He entered the United States Air Force in his late 20's as a Captain. Dr. Paul Terry Batties was stationed at Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base near Saigon in South Vietnam for one year, ending his Service as a Major in the United States Air Force. Our family recalls this particular air force base being bombed and the relief of receiving word that he had been protected from harm.
Upon his return to the United States, he completed advanced professional training on a fellowship at the University of Kentucky to become a Cardiologist. Subsequently, he was inducted into the National Organization of The American College of Cardiology to become a Fellow of The American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Batties enjoyed an extensive practice of Cardiology and Internal Medicine in Indianapolis. He was in private practice at Methodist Hospital and Winona Hospital. Dr. Batties had a warm and cordial manner in which he carried out the fulfillment of professional responsibilities. Paul Terry was decorated with medical awards, certificates, and accomplishments ranging from Who's Who in Executives and Business to Professional and Civic Awards. He was a member of the American Medical Political Action Committee. Paul Terry was a History Maker as a founding member of the Association of Black Cardiologists in 1974. In the Indianapolis Society of African-American History and Culture, Dr. Paul terry Batties was cited as a Medical Icon by being the first Black Cardiologist in this city. Dr. Batties was a member of the Aesculapian Medical Society and National Medical Association. Paul Terry enjoyed traveling the world to attend medical conferences to pursue his love of lifelong learning for the patients he served.
We have many memories of birthday celebrations, holiday gatherings, and boat outings in the home he enjoyed in Geist. The family holds precious memories of our annual Christmas brunches filled with laughter and fun in which Paul Terry passed out the gifts. Paul Terry's interests included: socials and parties, traveling, Colts football, cars, and movies. Paul Terry was a proud member of the Bachelors Benedict Club.
On October 8, 2024, Paul Terry Batties, M.D. transitioned from this earthly life. He had been blessed with a beautiful life spanning over 83 years. Though we share immense pride in his contributions and accomplishments, we will miss his presence in our family and community. He will live on in the hearts and memory of family, his many former patients, and among the many friends who knew and loved him.
Members of Paul Terry's immediate family that are left to cherish the many memories include: his sister, Camile Hill; cousins, Betty Jo Williams, Carla D. Johnson (Ivan), Thomas L. Batties, Esq., Mark D. Batties, IV, (Samantha), Robin Pritchett (Maurice), Shawn M. Batties, Tyrone and Jack Hickman, George Dixon, Melvin Johnson, and Gwen Frencher (Ronald), and a host of extended relatives and friends.
