Cadillac - Paul Rex Beardsley, longtime resident of Cadillac and Traverse City native passed away on Monday, September 15, 2025 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was 93.

Paul was born on October 2, 1931, in Traverse City, Michigan. He was raised by his parents, Robert and Stella (Glazier) Burns. He was a graduate of Traverse City High School and went on to earn a doctorate from the Chicago College of Chiropody, now known as the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. During his time in college, he proudly received the Terryberry Key award, recognizing Paul as the highest achieved student in his graduating class. Paul entered into marriage with the former Helen M. Kelenske on August 30, 1952, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church at a little known place on the Leelanau Peninsula called Isadore. Even as a married man and a licensed podiatrist, Paul proudly served his country with the United States Army toward the end of the Korean War.

The man of many lives and many talents, Paul went from podiatry and plant manager for Reynolds Aluminum, to entrepreneur and full-time volunteer. He, along with the love of his life Helen, purchased and operated the Sweet Shop in Cadillac in 1982 only to relinquish the reins to their daughter in 2002. However, he could still be seen and found within the shop's door for years after no longer being the owner. Paul was an important piece of the community intricately woven into the fabric of what is Cadillac, from his relentlessly giving and helpful heart. Paul gave of his resources, time, and talents to so many. From the years at the Sweet Shop, his active role at the St. Ann's Parish, his time spent as the voice of the Cadillac Marching Band, to lead grief support and the countless other ventures volunteering to help anyone in need. The "Candy Man" will be remembered not only for the sweets he gave and provided to our community but more for the sweet nature he showed to all.

Paul is survived by his loving daughter, Janeen (Dan) Bundy of Manton; two adored grandchildren, Jasmine Russell and John "JP" (Tara) Russell and children; his sisters, Mary (Denny) Marois and Marilyn Basso; and many other loving family members and friends

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 62 years, Helen M. Beardsley; his parents; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Paul's life will be celebrated with a Memorial Mass at 11am on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the St. Ann Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior.

Officiating will be Rev. Michael Janowksi. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cadillac Area Honor Guard and the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
