Paul Sheldon Bernet

Paul Sheldon Bernet, beloved husband, partner, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on July 7th. He was born in Syracuse on December 29, 1954, to Paul H. Bernet Jr. and Norma Bernet. Paul was a lifelong learner, a master of many trades, and deeply committed to family. Following in his fathers footsteps, Paul was a partner at Midstate Spring, and a master spring maker. Paul built a life with his wife Phyllis on their Marietta farm, which along with Otisco Lake, were the places most important to him. They raised goats, pigs, horses, beef cattle, chickens, and Happy Thanksgiving turkeys for the family. Paul loved nature, spending hours engaged in fishing, hunting, archery, boating, motocross, and in the companionship of his many dogs and horses, over the years. As a lifelong learner, Paul was always doing quiet research in many areas- making natural balms, his own spice blends, homemade beer, educating himself about wines, natural remedies, meditation and holistic health. He also studied Tai Chi and became an avid runner. He was a talented woodworking and leatherworking artist, always insisting on making all of his Christmas gifts for the family. He also loved music, spending time listening, playing his guitar, and attending concerts.While he didnt have kids of his own, Paul invested in the children that came into his life- both with Phyllis, and after her passing, with Krissy. Zach Raus, Noli Potter, and Joy Miles were shining stars in his life. He served them as both a mentor and a friend. Paul shared his world and passions- teaching responsibility and hard work, while passing on life lessons. Paul is predeceased by his parents; his wife of 20 years, Phyllis (Carbone); his sister, Leslie Bernet DelGigante; brother, David L. Bernet; brother-in-law, Joseph DelGigante; and nephew, Raymond John Bernet.Each chapter of Pauls life was full, and he leaves behind many who love him- both family and friends. He is survived by his beloved girlfriend, Krissy Volles of Marietta; sister, Lauren (Walter) of Manlius; brothers, Charlie Sr (Charlene) of Manlius and John (Kelly) of Murrells Inlet, SC. His legacy lives on through his devoted nieces and nephews who carry forward the wisdom and kindness he shared: Simon, Alec, and Jesse DelGigante, Paul and Alex Melnikow, Lilli Komurek, Charlie Bernet, Jr, David, Matt, and Yvonne Bernet, and Emma and Michael Bernet.A Memorial Celebration honoring Pauls life will be held at a later date.
