Paul Chandler MD Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 25, 2024.
Dr. Paul Winston Chandler, 65, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

Dr. Paul Chandler was born on April 24, 1958, in Pecos, Texas to the late Joy Mann Chandler Carpenter and Richard Kelly Chandler. He is survived by his loving wife, Wendy DuBose Chandler, his sons Joseph Paul Chandler (Christine) of Birmingham, their daughter Wendy Collins Chandler (Winnie), Louis Christian Chandler of Nashville, Maxwell Kenneth Chandler (Ashley) of Auburn, their daughter Bentley Kate Chandler, his sisters Linda Fox of Houston, Texas, and Ava Gerke (Calvin) of Barstow, Texas. He is preceded in death by his mother Joy (Rusty) Carpenter; as well as Joe and Cleo Williams who helped him immensely in his youth with their love, care, and guidance.

Dr. Chandler loved impacting the lives of others through his work as a radiologist. He spent the majority of his career with Radiology Associates of Macon. Dr. Chandler was known for his tenacity in care, excellence in fatherhood, and thoughtful guidance to all who came knocking on his door. Wherever Dr. Paul Chandler went, he made intentional efforts to leave people better than how he found them. As a Christian, he taught his sons to love the Lord with all their hearts and keep God first in their lives. He was a highly talented golfer and would never turn down a putting contest. His sons, daughters in-law, wife, sisters, family and friends loved him immensely, and will miss him dearly. Dr. Chandler graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas in 1980 and Alpha Omega Alpha from Baylor College of Medicine in 1983. He completed his residency with the University of Alabama Medical Center in 1988. He was awarded the Stuart Wallace Award for Outstanding Student in Pathology at Baylor College of Medicine in 1984, inducted as a Fellow of American College of Radiology in 2014, and designated as the Pediatric Residents Educator of the Year for Navicent Health System in 2019. He retired from medicine in 2022 and returned to Birmingham, Alabama where he and Wendy DuBose Chandler met and married during his residency with UAB.

A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM, on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Vestavia Hills Methodist Church at 2061 Kentucky Avenue, Vestavia Hills, Alabama followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas (www.bcm.edu).

I first met Dr. Chandler as a young Mercer medical student in 1995. At first, he always seemed a little bit grumpy and a little bit rushed and a little bit irritated with any interruptions. For some reason, all the radiologists always seemed a bit grumpy, locked away in dark rooms, looking at xray films and dozens of pages of CT films (remember those?!) all day. But as I finished medical school and residency, then became an attending physician there at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, I got to know him more and more. We talked xrays, pediatric medicine, politics (both national and there at the medical center), family, sports, and anything else that was on our minds. I grew to cherish his friendship and advice, and eagerly looked for any opportunity to go over a CT scan with Paul. Through the years, he was always the same...initially seemed a little grumpy at the interruption, but always with a sly twinkle in his eye, as if he knew he was about to have fun teasing me a bit, and then chatting about the topic of the day. I am absolutely heartbroken to hear of his passing. A true gentleman, and an incredible pediatric radiologist. And although I never met his family, he spoke often of them, always beaming with pride. I am forever grateful for his teaching, his remarkable clinical skills, and his friendship. There will never be another like him.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of Dr. Chandler. He was a great mentor to me as a student and several years later I had the pleasure of working with him as a friend and colleague before his retirement. He was a great person and an incredible radiologist who has had profound impact on so many in our community. Praying for comfort and peace for his family.

I am so sad to hear Dr. Chandler has passed away. I was a recent graduate in ultrasound when I first was hired at MCCG in 1988. I remember the day he joined Radiology Associates and he became the supervising radiologist over ultrasound. He was dedicated to teaching and mentoring our sonographers and I owe him a world of gratitude for the education I gained working beside him. He demanded excellence but was always kind and patient. He loved his family with all his heart and many times we would sit in his office and talk. He would always ask me about my family and you could tell he really cared. My heart breaks for his wife, boys and sisters. I pray that God will embrace them during this most difficult time and give them comfort. Go rest high on that mountain until we meet again.

Dr Chandler was such a pleasant person. He genuinely cared about his family, faith, friendships and people! He was a kind person and this world was a kinder place because of him. He will be sorely missed. May God grant comfort to the family during this time of sorrow.

I met Paul in the 7th grade and really became great friends in High School. We had continued being close even when he went off to college. He would come home and we always hung out. We had some great times. I remember when he said he was getting married and he picked a winner in you Wendy. You were his everything and he loved the boys like nobody could. I am so sad that we will no longer get together here but I will always remember him and our brotherhood we had. My prayers are with you and the boys Wendy.

Wendy, Joseph,Lewis and Max,
I´m so sorry for your loss! Paul has been a customer and more importantly a friend for over 20 years. He used to stop by my store on Vineville on his way home from work to touch clubs and talk to me and "decompress ". That continued when I moved to Idle Hour. I will miss our talks and his extensive knowledge of the game of golf. Please let me know if any of you need anything from me in the future. Love you all.

So sorry to hear about Paul's passing. He and I go all the way back to the University of Texas days where we were both students trying to get into medical school. Our relationship had remained solid throughout the years and he was a close, wonderful friend and a brother in Christ and he will be truly missed. I know that he is with the Lord now and my prayers go out to Wendy and the family and may God bless and comfort you all during this very, very difficult time. We will all reunite someday in Heaven.

Dear Wendy,
Terri and I were so saddened to hear of Paul's passing. During the many years we practiced together in Radiology Associates of Macon, we had many conversations concerning politics, medicine as it relates to radiology, sports, family and other "men things". Paul had quite a sense of humor. I spoke to him recently and was shocked to hear he had died. He was a great guy and an amazing radiologist. He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I met Paul while playing golf with my young son years ago at Healy Point Golf Club. Ran into him years later at The Brickyard and we played many rounds together. Such a nice man. He actually gave my son, a college golfer at the time, a putter from his vast collection. One of the kindest, most generous men I have ever encountered. I was genuinely saddened when I heard of his death. God bless, Paul. You impacted so many in big and small ways.

Wendy, boys and grandchildren,
This is such a great loss, and I will keep you all in my prayers. Nancy Suit let me know, as I have not kept up with too many people. I know the days of FPD and active boys, have long gone, but your family was one of the finest and kindest families I had the pleasure of knowing.
Be strong in the Lord,

I was very sorry to learn about Paul´s recent passing. I knew Paul both professionally and personally as l cared for Paul and his respiratory allergies. Paul was always the consummate Southern gentleman and a role model for both students and colleagues alike. He was dedicated in offering the most accurate diagnostic care for all of his young patients. He will be missed by all of his Macon patients and students. My thoughts and prayers are for all of his family members in this difficult time in life. David Plaxico.MD

I worked with Dr Chandler throughout my career. He was the one person that I initially loathed working with. He had a way of teaching you how to be your best, and the growing pains hurt. Dr Chandler always invested in what he believed in, personally and professionally, so the growing pains were actually the ultimate compliment. He believed in you and believed in your potential. He loved to ask and hear about your family. He always bragged on his family and how proud he was of each of them. Anyone that learned from Dr Chandler is incredibly blessed. There will never be another Dr Chandler. He is and will forever be missed in Peds radiology. Sending all the love and prayers to his family, friends, and colleagues.

One of my most favorite people and colleagues. So many times , I would stop to look at a scan with him and then ended up staying to talk about anything and everything. Asked his advice a few months ago on the phone not knowing he had retired ; he was very helpful. Told him I would see him in Birmingham soon and have a beer or two when next visiting my daughter and he said he would really look forward to it. Never knew it would be the last time I would talk to him .

So sad to hear this news. I sure enjoyed Paul´s dry wit and he made a real, positive impact here in Macon. He will be greatly missed.
My condolences to Wendy and the rest of the family.

Take the phone off the hook in Peds, during fluoro; That was the first thing you did! :) Dr. Chandler wouldn´t "learn" your name until you completed the X-ray program ( even though he knew it). Everyone was called student. He was a little intimidating at first, but once you got to know him and he got to know you, you understood his humor and you learned he was a very caring and great radiologist. He will be severely missed at "The Med" by so many people that knew him. Prayers for you all.

I was renamed "student" as Dr . Chandler loved to call the X-ray students. His pathology award doesn´t surprise me as he always took the time to teach the students as he was taking care of patients. He was very thorough taking care to diagnose my own children correctly. He was always talking about his boys with much pride. Praying for your family. He will be missed.
