Paul Cilinski Obituary

Paul S Cilinski

AGE: 56 • Brigantine

Paul Stephen Cilinski, age 56, of Brigantine, NJ, passed away after a brave battle with cancer, on Sunday, December 11th, in Toms River, New Jersey.

Paul was born on March 24, 1960 in Alexandria, VA. He was the fourth of six children born to the late Catherine E. (Altobelli) and Edward P. Cilinski. Paul was raised in Alexandria, but relocated to New Jersey 33 years ago, where he began establishing himself as a popular local musician. His vibrant personality, friendly demeanor, and wonderful connection with his audience has helped him create one of the largest and most loyal fan bases at the Jersey Shore. Paul performed a wide variety of music, featuring Jimmy Buffet and James Taylor, in addition to hundreds of rock, pop, and country songs spanning from the 1960's to present day. Paul performed as the opening act for several national acts, including: The Pure Prarie League; The Go Go's; Todd Rundgren; Southside Johnny; and Nils Lofgren, and was recently featured in the book, "Great Jersey Musicians," (2013). In addition to performing at many popular local venues, Paul also performed regularly in the off season in Key West, Florida, St. Maartin, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Paul's songs are a reflection of the man he was, and the life he lived, uplifting, inspiring, and filled with love. The beauty in his words will continue to fill us with the incredible joy he felt for life, and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of all who knew and loved him, for many years to come. He is, and always will be, a Jersey Shore Legend.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife Justine; two loving daughters, Carly and Emily Cilinski; five siblings; Michael Cilinski and his wife Sara, Rev. Robert Cilinski, Joseph Cilinski, Mary Ann Dunn and her husband Greg, Edward Cilinski, Jr.; his beloved mother-in-law, Josette Peterson, two sisters-in-law, Denise Weber and Deneen White; 3 nieces, 3 nephews, and many other relatives, friends, and fans.

Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 p.m., and 6:00-9:00 p.m. Wednesday at D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m., Thursday at St. Mary of the Lake Church, 43 Madison Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. Burial will follow at St. Mary of the Lake cemetery, Lakewood NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Paul's name to the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh (community organization), 815 16th Avenue, Belmar, New Jersey 07719. When I was going thru chemo, Paul's music cheered me up. He always played my favorite James Taylor song when Jim & I came in the door to see him. We are so sad that such a wonderful human being has left us and will miss him like no other. We love you Pauly. Holly and Jim

Paul was all that was right about living - and he did an amazing job of spreading the message of the celebration of life. He brought sunshine and generosity into my life and my family's - whether it was just listening to the beautiful music on a warm summer night or his performing at our family benefits for our daughters. Way, way missed. But, he's in our hearts.

As I prepare to make my first batch of eggnog, I will always remember you, Paul. Tonight, Friday, I would have delivered him his personal mason jar full at Connolly. He would stop, abandon whatever he was drinking, and announce to all that he was about to drink the best eggnog he's ever had. When I have my first sip, it will be with cheers to Paul. And, thank you Paul, for our duets. "When will I be loved", (with an occasional Mockingbird thrown in) almost every Friday I was at Connolly. Your harmony made it all the better. Thanks for letting me sing with you. As someone else here commented, prayers to Paul and all people fighting, losing, and sometimes winning, the cancer battle. Justine, Emily, Carly, family, we are so sorry for your loss. Diane and Ken.

As a friend of Paul's from Groveton high school, I did not know the adult Paul. I only knew the 16-18 year-old version of a really great guy. I believe he was the only guy at Groveton those years who had talent on the school stage (Remember Godspell?) as well as the football field. With that much diverse talent, he could have been a snob but he was not. My condolences to all the other "Valley Boys" and to all who knew and loved Paul.
Sincerely, Martha Weber Jaffe

I will always remember his kind nature, wonderful voice and love of life. He will be deeply missed. The Jersey Shore will never be quite the same without him. Rest in peace, our dear friend. Heaven got another angel this week, and this one has a guitar in hand and smile on his face. xo

Growing up, the summer always consisted of going to listen to you play with my parents. As I got older, you became part of my summer at the beach and no summer was complete without going to a happy hour to hear you play or hearing your songs resonate across my parents deck. You will be deeply missed and I know that you are already strumming away on your guitar up in heaven.

May you rest in eternal peace Paul Celinski. Your kind does not come along very often in this world. A good man to all: friend and stranger, young and old, rich and poor. I am so glad this past October we were able to spend one last pleasant time together on a pleasant day, in a pleasant localenear the beach and palm trees you so often sang about. I will not soon forget it my friend

Our deepest sympathies to Justine, Emily, Carly and the rest of your family. Happy hour, no matter where we live, will never be the same.

We met Paul about 25 years ago through out daughter Kimberly who became a fan at the Norwood and knew him before we did. Not only did he become a friend but so many other people that we met through him.

We have many great memories over the years including the New Years Eve celebrations with family and friends. Even though we now live in SC we were able to make it last year. New Years Eve will certainly be much sadder.

But a happier memory involves our now 8 year old grandson Kevin. From an early age he loved Paul's music and sang along to Kimberly's CD in the car. His favorite is Banana Boat which he always asked Paul to sing - which, of course, he did.

RIP Paul. Our family will always remember and miss you.

Living in Belmar in the 90s gave me the opportunity to spend many Saturday nights at Paddy Macs on 18th Ave listening to Paul. He always welcomed my husband, Henry and me by name, and even learned to play 'School Boy Heart' by Jimmy Buffett at Henry's request. Paul - thank you for always making us feel special. You will forever hold a place in our hearts. May you Rest In Peace and entertain in Heaven as beautifully as you did at the Jersey Shore.

When we opened our business in 1996 Paul was one of the first people to walk in. I remember his bright smile, wishing us the best of luck and welcoming us to the area. He remained a customer over the years even when we moved across town. He was one of the nicest people we ever had the pleasure to know. We would go to Connelly Station in Belmar to hear him play and he would always say hello and shake hands. Truly one of a kind. R.I.P Paul you will be missed by many.

I remember when I would walk into where Paul was playing. He'd say Hello with his eyes when he was in the middle of a song. Then right after he would say "I've got your Two Pina Coladas coming up". He knew me and the song I'd always ask for. He was one of a kind. Warm summer evenings by the water won't be the same without him.

For those of you that hadn't had the chance to meet Paul, or catch a " Happy Hour" at Tradewinds, a Friday, Saturday at The Norwood,or Sunday at the Columns. Paul was able to reach into the heart of his audience. His passion for music was astounding, if you enjoy acoustic music, YouTube Paul Cilinski listen to his covers and his music. A few of my favorites are "Weekend Run" and "Something in the Water" raise a glass to him this evening, and pray for the families that are fighting cancer and for the ones that have lost the battle. So sad to hear about the passing of Paul. He was an amazingly talented man. I took guitar lessons from him in the late 1970's after 5 o'clock mass on Saturdays at St. Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia, where we grew up. After high school, we loved to go listen to him play at The Ground Round and other venues in Alexandria. Paul was one of the good guys - handsome, talented, and kind. He will be missed.

Paul Cilinski Justine Peterson-Cilinski So many thoughts go through my head today. Discovered Paul Cilinski and his tambourines and moroccos in the early 1990's. Our beach house was up the block from the Norwood inn and all of our beach house girls would meet up at the Norwood Inn on Friday nights when we arrived. I had many a bruise from smacking my tambourine too hard. Enjoyed also bringing friends to hear Paul's rendition of a "happy birthday". Then, I would occasionally go to Hudsons in Hoboken on a cold winter night to hear Paul play there. I introduced Paul to my brothers JT Meehan and Bill Meehan, my parents, my sisters in law, Andrea and Meghan, a multitude of friends, my ex-husband (Paul played at his "Pirate looks at 40" Birthday), my cousins Lois Sparrock Kim O'Connor Kelly, my niece -Amanda Patricia and nephew- Anthony Meehan, Lisa Buschmann, Kelly Hering and Geoff Ward. So many Friday nights, even off season, I would literally ( not just in the song) be trying to 'beat the traffic' to get home to see Paul at Connolly Station. I met so many friends there, and we all carry a piece of your heart with us Paul. You always had a smile and whomever walked in, you always knew a face, and their name and their favorite song. My favorite "Paul song" was "Sweet Melissa" and I hear You playing it in my head tonight and will always think of you when I hear that and A dozen other songs. It was a pleasure growing 'older but not up' with your music and a pleasure to have you and Justine in my life. I enjoyed "crashing the honeymoon" when it turned out you and Justine had just eloped and were in Key West the same week as me. May your new life in Heaven be forever a "Weekend Run...the wind at your back, sailing in the sun...." heading to Margaritaville. Rest in eternal peace my friend. You will be greatly missed.

Just over a year ago I met a friend for a party on Brennan 6 at JSUMC. He was surrounded by his family and friends after a difficult card he was dealt. During that visit, and a few after that, we discussed the summer venues. We discussed taking on some early gigs on Sunday afternoon. He played those Sunday afternoons battling through the hell that he had faced on days prior, knowing he had to battle the flames in days to come. This morning he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, rest easy Paul Cilinski... The "weekend run" will never be the same!

Paul was the quintessential friend to all. His smile, his talent, and his love of life radiated on the shores of the East Coast! Summer days/evenings won't be quite the same. We hope you knew how much your music touched our souls. Our condolences to Justine, his girls, and extended family. xo

For you Paul!I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the years spent with you. Meeting for the first time at the pub at Brookdale, 26 years ago. Ripple was my request.... and every time ever since.
Conversations and singing are the memories... and I have many. Thank you.
knowing you are no longer in pain, warms my heart.

"If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?"

You will be missed, I love you.... I feel as if I'm 18 again,
Justine ... We are so sorry....

In 1985 Paul learned and played and obscure Dennis Wilson song "Forever" and played it at Pat's Thirty Acres for my marriage to the beautiful Lauren Nikola. Ever after, whenever I walked in to a venue where Paul was playing, guaranteed, the next song was a Beach Boys tune. Just seeing Paul anywhere gave my heart a jump as his positivity resonated throughout the crowd. I thank his parents and family for providing an individual who provided such joy to so many. His loss hurts bad, yet is tempered by the immeasurable great memories...

Today the Jersey Shore lost a beloved artist. Summers at the shore will never be the same. He brought so much joy to everyone who ever met him. While his performances on stage, were so engaging, it paled, by comparison, to his personality when you met him.

Close to 30 years ago I met him while he was playing at the Norwood Inn. We became friends immediately that night. Over the years we traveled, laughed, cried and helped each other through the good times and the hard times (wish I could have done something to help with this one). There are to many stories to express here but they will live on forever in my mind.
I will miss him dearly. RIP Paul Cilinski
