Paul Cummins

Paul Cummins, 74, a lifelong Spokane County resident known for his generous spirit and warm hugs, was called to his eternal home on Monday, October 6, 2025. He passed away peacefully at Providence Sacred Heart Hospital at the age of 74.

Born to Thomas and Betty (Bundy) Cummins on April 9, 1951, Paul was the youngest of three children. Alongside his older brothers, Dale and Steve, he grew up in Chattaroy. Paul's commitment was evident early on through his involvement with the Boy Scouts, where he proudly earned his Eagle Scout award. After graduating from Riverside High School in 1969, he answered the call to serve, joining the U.S. Navy. As a Vietnam veteran stationed on the USS Ticonderoga, he served his country with honor.

Paul’s life was marked by love and dedication. In 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, Cheryll Erickson, and together they welcomed two children, Jennifer and Michael. He found love again in October 1997 when he met Lisa. They were married in July 1998 and shared a wonderful 25 years before her passing in 2023. Through his marriage to Lisa, Paul gained two more sons, David and Kyler Layne.

In the late 70s and early 80s, Paul was a familiar voice on the local CB radio waves, where he was known as "Captain Cup." His dedication extended to the community as a committed supporter of the MDA Labor Day Telethons.

Paul's legacy is one of compassion and connection. He had a gift for listening and connecting with people, always ready to hear their stories and share his own. Friends and family will forever cherish his ability to offer a listening ear and a warm hug.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Betty; his brother, Steve; his sister-in-law, Christie (Chris); his nephew, Jeffrey (Jeff) Cummins; his first wife, Cheryll Erickson; and his beloved wife, Lisa Cummins.

Paul is survived by his children, Jennifer Benge (John) and Michael (Jennifer) Cummins; his stepchildren, David Layne and Kyler (Sandy) Layne; and ten grandchildren, who brought him immense joy: Brian and Arti (Madisyn) Benge; Mercy, Journey, Ryklan, and Caius Cummins; and David Jr., Caiden, Kloey, and Kinsley Layne.

A service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 1st, at Riplinger Funeral Home, 4305 N Division St, Spokane, WA 99207. He will be laid to rest at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake on Monday, November 3rd.
