Dr. Paul H. Dahm, a devoted husband, beloved father, and esteemed pediatric intensivist, passed away at age 49, leaving a legacy of excellence, knowledge, kindness and love. Born in Houston, Paul was the son of Dr. Karl H. Dahm and Dr. Lida Dahm, and brother to Elizabeth, Karl, and Annemarie. He grew up surrounded by his extended German, American and later Bolivian family, including aunts, uncles, cousins, and nephews. His untimely death leaves a significant void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, patients, and community.
Paul was a gifted intensivist and a passionate teacher. He worked for 12 years at Childrens Memorial Hermann Hospital; the longest of any other intensivist there. He graduated from the University of Texas McGovern Medical School, which is affiliated with Memorial Hermann. In a way you could say he never left the Houston Medical Center. He enjoyed mentoring residents and loved his time in the unit. Working long hours was not a chore for him, as he was motivated to provide the best possible care for his patients while collaborating with colleagues and staff, all while wearing his famous cowboy boots and asking random questions during night rounds. He was the Medical Director of Transport at Childrens Memorial Hermann and took this role very seriously, leading the team to great success, that he attributed to the hard work of his beloved team.
In May 2009, Paul married Dr. Milenka Cuevas Guaman, whom he met in Pediatric residency. Together, they built a home and life of love, friendship and camaraderie full of happiness, joy, and were lucky enough to have 2 beautiful kids. He was the proud father of Tomas and Ofelia, and nothing brought him more joy than his role as a dad. Pauls wisdom and love for knowledge will continue through them. He imparted to them and shared with them his curiosity and love for traveling, fixing things and taking care of things. The trips he most enjoyed were the spontaneous trips, ones that were never planned more than a few days in advance. Despite his illness, this past year was full of adventures, one of which was time on the family ranch where this last season he even got a buck and took care of it from beginning to end. The last time in his family lake house he repaired the old family boat and took his family for a ride. His last international trip was to Bolivia, where he celebrated his 49th birthday serenaded with Mariachis and had a typical Bolivian Christmas. As a proud Eagle Scout he enjoyed participating in his kids' activities at Cub Scouts and mentored a soon to be Eagle Scout on his Eagle Scout project.
He lived life to the fullest and with great honor and courage. In April 2024, Paul was diagnosed with renal cancer, fought hard and left knowing no stone was unturned.
Paul and family are sincerely and eternally grateful to all who loved and supported Paul professionally and personally throughout his life and illness.
A Celebration of Pauls Life will be held on Saturday, April 19 from 2PM to 4PM at the Bradshaw Carter Funeral Home, 1734 W. Alabama Street Houston, TX 77098. All who wish to celebrate his life are welcome to attend.
