Publish in a newspaper

Paul Gerard Hein, 88, of New Dorp, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born on July 20, 1937, in Greenwich Village, New York City, to the late Paul and Lillian Hein. He attended St. Joseph's Elementary School and went on to graduate high school from La Salle Academy on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
One of Paul's early jobs was at West Side Savings Bank in Manhattan, and it was there that he met his future wife, Helen. The two moved to Staten Island, New York, settling in the town of New Dorp. Paul was a proud police officer for the NYPD, spending most of his 25-year-long career working at the 66 Precinct in Borough Park, Brooklyn. He was in charge of the Auxiliary Unit and also loved taking care of the precinct dog, Gertrude. After he retired, he worked at St. Joseph-by-the-Sea High School for over 10 years, where he enjoyed talking sports with the athletes and hearing about their games. He was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church for over 50 years, and served as an usher at Sunday Mass.
Paul had many hobbies. He loved baseball and was an avid fan of the New York Giants. As a youngster, he often visited The Polo Grounds to watch the Giants play, and remained a fan through the team's move from New York to San Francisco. He had a vast knowledge of baseball and a talent for numbers, making statistics his forte. He also enjoyed playing basketball with his younger neighbors on the block, where his trusty hook shot was his go-to move. Paul was also an active member of the Great Kills Swim Club with his late wife. Paul's other hobbies included playing cards, lotto, reading the newspaper, collecting coins, and watching old-time movies, where he could name every actor and actress. He was a lover of music, enjoyed singing and dancing, and often attended concerts, especially Doo-Wop. Paul had quite the sweet tooth, especially for Coca-Cola and Hershey's chocolate. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, whether introducing them to his hobbies or treating them to the snacks he adored.
Paul was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen, who passed away just two months earlier in September. He was the loving father to Carolyn McGee and Donna Renna. Dear father-in-law to Leonardo Renna. Devoted grandfather to Ariana Renna, Nicholas Renna and Paul Hein. Brother to the late Joan & Johnnie Adams and Denise & the late Charles Dunkel. Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Kind friend to ALL.
A special thank-you goes to his caregiver and friend, J.R., for the loving care he provided over the past several years. His dedication is valued beyond measure.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the John Vincent Scalia Home For Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd. (at Eltingville Station), Staten Island, New York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church located at 90 Third Street, Staten Island, New York 10306. Interment will follow in Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
