It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Edward Nytko (Don), a beloved husband, father, veteran, and friend, who left this world peacefully on November 14, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on January 9, 1939, in New York, NY, as the only child of Frank and Emma Nytko, he grew up with the grit, spirit, and determination that only a true New Yorker can carry. Those qualities stayed with him throughout his life and became the foundation of the man so many came to love and admire.
In his early years, Don received his First Communion on May 25, 1946, and was confirmed in the Catholic faith on October 18, 1948. He attended The Epiphany School in the Gramercy neighborhood of New York City and later La Salle Academy, where he excelled as a track and field athlete. At the young age of 17, and with his father's consent, Don proudly answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. His time in service shaped him deeply-instilling honor, discipline, and a lifelong sense of duty to others, as well as strengthening his commitment to aviation. He often spoke of those years with pride, cherishing the friendships he formed and the lessons he learned during his overseas travels and deployments in Japan and other Far East Asian countries.
It was during his assignment on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and his trips through the Sturbridge Ma area that he met "the love of his life," Miss Diana Gay Eastman. On February 6, 1961, the pair eloped during a memorable blizzard, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with adventure, laughter, deep affection, and the kind of steady love that endures until the end of time. After their marriage, Don and Diana moved to
Milford, Connecticut, where they planted deep roots, welcomed their two children, David and Steven Nytko, and built their family over the next 64 years, until Diana preceded Don in death earlier this year.
In his later years, Don worked for Sikorsky Aircraft, retiring from their Quality Assurance Test Lab after more than 20 years of service. A true Capricorn, Don continued to work even during retirement, serving as Diana's unofficial executive assistant in her real estate appraisal business. He traveled to countless municipalities across Connecticut, pulling field cards and taking photos of subject properties. When he wasn't working, Don enjoyed indulging his passion for SCUBA diving, often taking dive excursions throughout the Caribbean; or cheering on the UConn Huskies women's basketball team. He also cherished the many long road trips he shared with his beloved Diana, driving back and forth to their home in Delray Beach, Florida, where they spent countless sunny days together.
Those who knew him will remember his easy smile, his thoughtful wisdom, his unwavering work ethic, and the way he loved and supported his "Diane". Now reunited with his wife and son, he leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be forever cherished. His story is one of service, sacrifice, perseverance, and love-an example that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Don is survived by his son, David, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Emma; his wife, Diana; and his son, Steven.
May he rest in eternal peace, held once more by those who awaited him with open arms.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with military honors at 4:30 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford.
