Paul F. Hogan, 87, of Plainfield, died July 29, 2024, in William W. Backus Hospital. He was the loving and devoted husband of Susan (Shores) Hogan for over 50 years. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of the late James Bernard and Helen (McElroy) Hogan. He lived for many years in the communities of Warwick and Smithfield, Rhode Island before settling into
Plainfield, Connecticut during his retirement.
In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by three sons, Chief Warrant Officer Scott Hogan (USCG) and his wife, Holly Radtke; Michael Hogan and his wife, Jennifer Hogan; and Matthew Hogan and his partner, Jen Ault. He will be deeply missed by his two grandchildren, Austin and Evelyn.
Paul is predeceased by his brother, Rev. Ralph Hogan; and sister, Phyllis Bilodeau.
As a young man, Paul was a Boy Scout and enjoyed spending summers at Camp Yawgoog in Rockville, RI, eventually volunteering when his sons joined the Scouts.
Paul joined the United States Navy in 1956, serving two years active duty aboard the USS Forrest Sherman (DD-931) followed by six years in the Navy Reserves.
Mr. Hogan's primary trade was as a carpenter and member of the Rhode Island Carpenters Local Union 94. He worked for thirty years between H. Carr and Sons Inc. in Providence, RI, and Conway & White Associates in Warwick, RI. When on road trips, he was proud to point out the many buildings that he had worked on during his career throughout Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
Restless in retirement, and when he ran out of things to fix around the house, he took a part time job at the Stop & Shop supermarket in Greenville, RI where he worked for eight years with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 328.
In his second retirement he took great pride and satisfaction in upgrading and maintaining his home and barn. A lover of animals, Paul enjoyed helping care for the horses and, with Susan, raised Smooth Fox Terriers as well as taking in many stray cats over the years. He was always happy to spend time with his grandchildren, often wearing silly t-shirts declaring his grandfather status. On many evenings, Paul could be found taking long car rides in the countryside with his wife, Susan.
As a lifelong sports fan, Paul had an encyclopedic knowledge about individual players and their careers. He loved watching the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, New England Patriots, Connecticut Sun, Providence College and UCONN basketball teams.
As a devout Catholic, Paul was a parishioner at many churches throughout his lifetime, most recently at St. Mary's Church in Jewett City, CT.
