Paul D. Hyer
1937 – 2025
- With tender hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Paul Dennis Hyer, who peacefully returned to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father on September 8, 2025. Paul lived a full and joyful life, right up until having a severe stroke.
Paul was born on April 23, 1937, in Logan, Utah, and grew up in Lewiston, surrounded by cousins, family, and the close-knit community he loved. He graduated from North Cache High in 1955 and was the fourth child of Clester Wallace Hyer and Ercille Marie Larsen Hyer. After high school, he proudly served his country with the U.S. Army in Germany, followed by an LDS mission, also to Germany. Later, when his family moved to Quincy, Washington, he met the love of his life, Kaye Mortensen, and they were married in the Logan Temple on August 2, 1961. Together, they were blessed with five children.
Paul built a remarkable career in Computer Information Technology as a Programmer, Analyst, and Manager. His work took him to Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, two meaningful years as Director of Computer Services at BYU–Hawaii, and more than three decades serving with the LDS Church and LDS Farm Management Company. A pioneer in computer technology, Paul remained curious and engaged with the latest innovations throughout his life.
Beyond his career, Paul had a gift for working with his hands. His woodworking shop was a place of joy and creativity, where he built beautiful furniture for his family and even handcrafted music stands for his local church. His willingness to share his many talents was a blessing to all who knew him.
Above all, Paul's greatest devotion was to God and his family. He lived a life of love and service, offering countless hours to his church, his neighbors, and his community. He especially enjoyed helping others with family history work and computer projects, always finding happiness in lifting others. His gentle kindness, faith, and sense of humor made him a beloved friend to many.
Paul served faithfully as Bishop of both the Union 3rd Ward and the Union 22nd Ward. He and Kaye created treasured memories with their children through camping trips, Father and Sons outings (even when the "sons" were still in diapers), and visits to historic church sites. Family vacations to Montana, Washington, and Oregon to see loved ones were some of his happiest times.
He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 55 years, Kaye; his parents; brothers Wally, Ruel, and David; and sister Nedra. He is survived by his loving children: Todd (Joy), Troy (Pam), Shane (Shari), Jay (Trisha), and Tammy Mortensen (Dale), along with 22 cherished grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, who will forever carry his legacy of faith, love, and service in their hearts.
A viewing will be held Sunday, September 14, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley Mortuary, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 S.) in South Jordan. Funeral services will be Monday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. at the church building located at 9750 S 2200 W, South Jordan, with a viewing beforehand from 9:30–10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Herriman City Cemetery, 12465 Pioneer St, Herriman.
