In Loving Memory of Paul Richard Johnson
November 27, 1954 – February 25, 2025
Paul Richard Johnson, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, musician, and friend, passed away on February 25, 2026, in
St. Clair Shores, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family. He was 71 years old.
Paul was born on November 27, 1954, in
Detroit, Michigan to Harold Richard Johnson and Charlotte Jean (née Bonneau) Johnson. He was their only son, of two children, and brought immense joy to their lives from the very beginning.
From his earliest days, Paul's extraordinary musical talent was undeniable. Even as a toddler, he showed a natural rhythm and deep connection to music that would define his life. A gifted drummer, Paul played with passion, precision, and heart. Music was not just something he did-it was who he was. Over the years, he performed with various bands and found his greatest contentment wherever music was present. He loved sharing that part of himself with family and friends, filling rooms and hearts with sound, energy, and soul.
Though music was his lifelong devotion, his greatest love was always his family. Paul was a deeply caring, thoughtful, and supportive man who would do anything for those he loved. He was known for his straightforward honesty-he told you exactly how it was-but that honesty was rooted in love. If Paul was direct with you, it was because he cared enough to be real.
He was a devoted father to his son, Paul, and took immense pride in being a constant, steady presence in his life. He cherished every moment watching his grandson, also Paul-whom he lovingly called Max-grow into his own person. Most recently, he delighted in becoming a great-grandfather to Santino, affectionately known as Sonny. Some of Paul's most treasured memories were the simple weekends spent together, witnessing his son and grandson grow, sharing laughter, stories, and time that will forever be held close in their hearts.
Paul was a simple man who found joy in life's simple pleasures: family, music, art, and the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time outside in and around Highland Park, Michigan, where he loved fishing, horseback riding, and shooting rifles. Nature brought him peace, just as music did.
In addition to his musical gifts, Paul was incredibly artistic. He expressed himself through drawing, freehand sketches, and painting. His artistic hobbies demonstrated a creativity and talent that extended far beyond the drum set. Whether through rhythm or brushstroke, he created beauty in his own distinct way.
Paul was also known for his quick wit, sarcasm, and sharp sense of humor. He had a remarkable ability to make those around him laugh, often when they needed it most. His presence filled a room-not only with music, but with warmth, laughter, and authenticity.
Paul Richard Johnson lived a life defined by passion, honesty, creativity, and unwavering love for his family. His rhythm may have quieted, but the music of his life continues to echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Paul's legacy lives on in his son, Paul R. Johnson II; his grandson, Paul Michael Johnson III and Yasmine, mother of Santino; his great-grandson, Santino; his nephew, Bryan McNamara; and many extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold R. Johnson, and Charlotte (Jean) Fradenburgh; and his sister, Sharon Johnson.
