Paul Karpan Obituary

Paul Michael Karpan, of Hopewell Township, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2025, in UPMC Washington. He was born September 7, 1922, in Washington County, a son of the late Paul and Anna Karpan, who immigrated from Croatia. Paul was a 1940 graduate of Washington High School and worked for Dravo Corporation until joining the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. Paul served in five campaigns as a T4 Technician Specialist in the 1st Army, 644th Tank Destroyers and was awarded five battle stars. After returning home from the war, Paul completed electrical school and became a member of the IBEW Local #5. He worked for much of his career at Chapman Corporation and retired in 1985. Paul was also a part-time farmer, growing up on and eventually purchasing his parents' farm, where he raised beef cattle for many years. Paul was a member of St. Hilary Church. He was also a member of the Croatian Lodge 354 and Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175. On January 12, 1963, he married Nancy Pletcher Karpan, who survives. Also surviving are five children, Judi (the late Joseph) Kovacicek, Kathy Beck, David (Janet) Karpan, Michael (Barbara) Karpan, and Brian Karpan; four grandchildren, Renae Salvitti, Brandon Beck, Breland Beck and Breanne Gentile; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren, Rocco Salvitti, Ryann Salvitti, Sofia Gentile, Lily Gentile, Hunter Beck, and Kaylee Beck; and two stepgreat- grandchildren. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Steve and John Karpan; a grandson, Ryan Kovacicek; and his first wife, Barbara Krajacic Karpan. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, September 28, in William G. Neal Funeral Homes, Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 29, in St. Hilary Church, 320 Henderson Avenue, Washington, with Father Alec Scheuer officiating. Interment will be held in Washington Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Army and Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Hilary Church, Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175 or any organization of one's choice.
