Paul was a very hard worker his entire life delivering the Portland Press Herald beginning at age 7. In his adult life he worked in Cabinet Making, S.D. Warren Paper Mill and Rocheleau's Gas Station. Later he apprenticed at May's Shoe Repair in Cumberland Mills to be able to start Paul's Shoe Repair. He also had 2 apt. houses he was always keeping in good repair. When he "retired" and we know what that means to many, he was working with trees, painting, plumbing, electrical, heating, mowing yards and taking care of others and their needs. He had a flock of his own 2 grandchildren, Derek and Nicole who lived nearby. They were always helping him around the yards and houses as well as riding on the back of the mower. Later it continued with the little neighborhood kids of Henry, Rachel, Shelby, and "Twinkle Toes" as we liked to call her always in her sparkly shoes when she showed up to help. Later, Carter was the kindest, caring, and concerned young man always coming to talk and check on Paul age 7-9. Paul was in the mild- moderate stages of his Alzhemers.
Paul Loved the City of Westbrook. He lived his whole life there, he was an Eagle Scout, played football in High School, built "the clubhouse," was on a softball team, coached Little League, loved bowling and his team going, doing, and winning state championships. He was a member of the Eagles, American Legion as he had 8 brother's and a sister as well as his father who were all service people. He wasn't. He attended Westbrook's Catholic Churches was a member of the great class of 1952 Westbrook High School. He was elected to the School Board, became a City Councilor and took a run for Mayor. He was married to Dianne (King) for 60 years his wife he so loved and that was a good thing for his 4 children. Michael who lives in the summers at Drake's Island in Wells, winters in Largo, FL. Toby is in Boothbay, and Lisa in Westbrook.
They had the greatest gatherings Sunday's for brunch of family and friends to talk, argue, and get rowdy about local, state, and country politics. A place where when family and friends left all were fine returning the next Sun. for another round. Those Sun are so missed.
Thousands of lifelong friends but those they rolled with, hung with, and lived those years with while their friends kids and their children were growing up were Barbara and Larry Swett, Peggy and Bob Morton, Donna and Bob Barrows, Carol and Bob Jordan, Anette and Freddie Wescott, Debbie Bird, Pat Larrabee, Kathy and Morris Harvey, Al and Lyda Zaharis, as well as the relates Bobbie and Russell, Conrad and Priscilla and Woody LeConte to name a few. He liked to spend time with Murray and Bev, always fixing the problems. Paul liked to walk the city and bike the city, always talking to people. He spent time always talking about old history with grandson B.J. He visited the "boys" Sean and Chris his grandsons and watched their ballgames. He was so proud of their graduations from college and told so many people. He biked his grandson Derek or walked him to school many days just because. He kept the bikes repaired and visited Ernie's when needed. He worked to get the Stroudwater River cleaned up after damage. He was so happy for granddaughters Brenda and Ronda at their accomplishments in the Sp. Olympics. Paul and sometimes his wife liked to "vacation" at the casinos and so they would go and stay a weekend or a day once a casino was in Maine. One day his daughter Lori called Toby on the phone to tell her she didn't dare leave her house or the window as he was up on the roof of his house fixing the Chimney at age 78. Lori lived beside her parents. At age 78 he was removing a large dead branch from a dead tree. He had it all set up properly with a counterbalance etc. when the large heavy limb fell he hadn't planned on the aluminum ladder bending which caused him to fall off the ladder breaking his shoulder. This was the only time he had been to the hospital for 2 overnights because he did it on the third of July. He liked visiting Stevie Lampron's and the people at River's Edge Deli. This was another place he liked spending time at playing cards and talking after breakfast or during lunch. They kindly in later years kept a watchful eye out for him as did his sister-in-law Kathy.
Paul lead a good 901/2 year life. He's "the lucky one, some people never get to do all he got to do now and forever."
