Paul Amos McClung, 67 of Hilltop, WV, passed away January 21, 2025, after battling a long illness. Paul was a loving father and grandfather who never knew a stranger and will always be remembered for his friendship and the way that he loved his family.
He was born at Oak Hill Hospital, now Plateau, on February 27, 1957, to Philip Amos McClung and Lilian Ruth McClung (Underwood) with whom he had a close and loving relationship. Paul attended Thurmond Grade School and Mount Hope Middle & High Schools, graduating in 1977 where he made many friends, some of which lasted a lifetime.
Paul worked for the C & O railroad, a youth rehab facility and afterwards continued a career of many different sales positions throughout the years. He often said, "I have sold about everything except for cars," and he was glad he didn't. These careers meant a lot to him, allowing him to make many friendships and connections with people that lasted throughout his life.
Paul and his former spouse Dawn Liss McClung couldn't wait to start a family of their own and his children Justin Michael McClung and Cherie Scott Liss meant the world to him. He will always be remembered more than anything else by his son, "The non-stop energy, time and a lifetime of support that taught him how to be a great father himself and what it meant to love your kids as a father."
In addition to his parents Paul was preceded in death by a sister, Penny McClung and is survived by brother Phillip McClung and sister Patricia McCormick of Hilltop, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that meant a lot to him in his lifetime. He always spoke with fond memories of his family, many cousins and how "tight knit" they all were.
Growing up in Thurmond, WV Paul was a member of Thurmond Union Church but he attended many other churches throughout his life. He always had a great love of God. He was always active in his community no matter the sport, indoor or outdoor. He coached wrestling at Mt. Hope High School in his early years and always spoke of the time spent at the Vikings training camp after school. Paul went on to coach in many different youth sports and later was a founding member of the New River Bass Masters Association. He had a lifelong passion for fishing locally and in tournaments all over America making fond memories with many relatives and friends who were never strangers to him. He was always ready to share his fishing passion with the younger generation. Everyone who knew Paul knew how much he loved fishing and while in his later years when mobility limited him, he had a fishing business, Fire Creek Lures making and selling tournament tested fishing tackle.
Although he loved fishing, being a father and a friend to many, Paul's favorite role was that of grandfather. He treasured his time with his grandkids and loved being their Pawpaw, never failing to show love or how proud he was of Noah and Adalie.
Paul was also an avid collector/trader of many types of sports memorabilia, coins, guns and antiques he attended and sold at many local collectors' shows.
We, his family couldn't have asked for a better parent and grandparent and we will miss him every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Lewis Christian Community Center, 469 Central Ave. in Oak Hill on Saturday, May 24th from 11-4.
In lieu of flowers please donate to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital since Paul was so dedicated to helping this charity. The family would greatly appreciate it.

I met Paul when I started working at Global. He was my trainer for that position. The moment I met him it was as if we had known each other our whole lives. He never met a stranger. From day one, we became good friends. Throughout our 28 year friendship we always picked up where we left off. Paul was truly one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Rest in Paradise Paul.....
