Paul Leon Reitzel was a favorite cousin in my early years while I was a child living with relatives in Siler City. I lived with our Granddaddy Reitzel and Aunt Grace, in the house right beside Paul Leon, Aunt Genia and Uncle Paul. Paul Leon was a hero of mine. Paul Leon always had a smile, even when I was bugging him. He had so many of the fun innovations that he used in Boy Scouts and in life. We all knew that he would be an engineer. He had hand warmers that he would let me use while we were waiting for our ride to school. He had these magnificent tree-hanging hammocks in his back yard that were so cool. He was always making things and fixing things. His Dad, my Uncle Paul, owned Reitzel motor company. Paul would help his Dad repair and service vehicles. Paul Leon had a love for antique cars. We would ride in antique vehicles to their fishing cottage at Shallotte. Boating with Paul Leon and my Uncle Paul was so much fun. Fond memories of going to Mt. Vernon Springs, where his mother, my Aunt Genia, grew up, to get jugs of the best tasting water to drink as we ate her cookies. His Mom, my Aunt Genia, was a great cook. She always had some marvelous snacks ready, which Paul and I devoured. Aunt Genia was a teacher and influenced me to become a teacher. She would help me with my school assignments. Paul Leon was so good with math. He could help me with my math and other homework, as he was older and had already had the lessons. He and Uncle Paul would come over to Granddaddy's house every day to check to be sure everything was good. Paul Leon loved his family so much. I will miss Paul Leon´s smile and caring nature. He is smiling and caring for others in heaven. He was such a blessing in my life.

I remember Paul making the most delicious fish for us one night at dinner at his house. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a wonderful sense of humor. His love for his family (and pets) was so evident. He once went out of his way to find me a part-time job when I was struggling to pay my bills. I will never forget that. Rest in peace, Paul.

Jean, Steve and I were so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. I know what means to lose a spouse, missing your other half and such a dynamic duo the two of you were. Time will dull the pain a bit but your love for him and your God will get you through.
