Paul Arthur "Art" Simmons, age 76 of Moravia, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015, due to an accident doing what he loved. Art was born December 26, 1938, to Walter Elijah and Thelma Fern (Harnden) Simmons. He attended school in Moravia and later completed the Police Academy in Des Moines. He worked as a police officer in Carroll County, Inwood, and Bellevue, Iowa. He married Daisy Millenon on December 14, 1957, in Albia. To this union, 7 children were born, Paul. Glenda, Julie, Paula, Jeffery, Randy, and Christy. They shared 28 years of marriage and later divorced. Art loved being outdoors, doing things such as fishing, hunting squirrels and raccoons, logging, and cutting firewood. He enjoyed the rodeo, riding mules, and pitching horseshoes. He enjoyed his dogs, Katie and Maggie. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball. Art enjoyed spending time with family and friends and especially enjoyed the Simmons family reunions, where he played his guitar and loved to dance. Art is survived by his children, Glenda (Clarence) Garrels of Hedrick, Julie Ackley of Udell, Jeffrey (Jan) Simmons of Dodge City, KS, and Christy (John) Flavey of Cambridge. Art is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; two sons, Paul, in infancy and Randy; a daughter, Paula, in infancy; and a sister, Mae Lavelle Smith. Per Art's request, his body has been cremated. There is no visitation planned and a private family burial will be held at a later date.
