Paul Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral & Cremation Services on Feb. 24, 2026.
MARQUETTE, MI - Paul Richard Smith, Jr., 55, of Marquette, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on February 22, 2026. He was born on June 3, 1970, in Dayton, Ohio.

Paul was raised in a military family, born to two proud members of the United States Air Force. This upbringing took him to numerous locations including California and Greece. He married the former Michele Wagner on July 13, 2001 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where he lived happily until returning back to Marquette, Michigan as of recent years.

Paul will be remembered most for the love he had for his family and the time he spent with those closest to him. His children were the center of his life, and he treasured every moment shared with them. Paul always saw the good in everyone and everything. He would light up a room with his laugh and corny jokes, which would always make for good conversation in any social setting. He encouraged those around him to be unapologetically themselves and to appreciate all of the small things life has to offer.

He enjoyed the outdoors and especially loved to golf. He always looked forward to his annual golf trip with his son and close friends. Paul also enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and downhill skiing. He appreciated the simple pleasure of being outside and spending time with family and friends. Whether in the woods, at camp, on the water, or on the golf course, he found happiness in those moments and in the company of those he loved.

Paul is survived by his two children, Madeline (Liam Schmitt) Sheedlo of Broomfield, Colorado, and Brandon (Ella Junion) Smith of Green Bay, Wisconsin; his brothers and sisters, Scott (Nicki) Smith of Negaunee, A.J. Smith, Joey Smith, Derek Smith, Aaron Smith, Amanda Smith, Alex Powell, and Allison Powell.

He was preceded in death by his parents Paul R. Smith Sr. and Vicki L. (Riley) Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to UPAWS.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in the spring.
