Paul “Skip” L. Smith Jr., 78, of Stowe, Vermont, passed away on March 5, 2026.Skip was the beloved son of the late Irene (Mitchell) O’Brien. He was the devoted father of Morgan Smith of Vermont and Joshua Smith of Michigan, and the loving stepfather of Elizabeth Percy and Katharine Percy, both of Vermont. He was the brother of Destiny O’Brien of Hingham and the late Robert W. Smith and Michelle O’Brien. Skip was also the proud grandfather of Alyssa Smith and the loyal companion of his beloved dog, Roxee. Skip will be remembered for the life he lived and the impact he had on those around him. Known for his kindness, character, and steady presence, he brought warmth to family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was marked by the relationships he built and the memories he created with those closest to him Skip was raised in South Boston and later in Wollaston. He attended Catholic schools and served as an altar boy alongside his younger brother Bobby at St. Ann’s Parish while growing up.

From an early age, he developed a love for hockey and could often be found at whatever local rink had ice time available—day or night. As a young adult, Skip enjoyed practice time with several members of the Boston Bruins, who were known to gather around his parents’ kitchen table after practice to share a home-cooked meal. He later served his country as an Army medic during the Vietnam War.A lifelong restaurateur, Skip traveled the country opening restaurants before eventually returning to the East Coast. He later settled in Vermont, where he raised his family and continued his career in hospitality. Skip dedicated his professional life to the restaurant business and was known for his passion for creating the “complete experience” for every guest he served. He inspired and mentored many along the way. His love for specialty foods and wine led him to pursue his sommelier certification. An accomplished skier, Skip traveled far and wide in search of the perfect powder. He also earned both his Captain’s and Pilot’s licenses and loved spending time on the open sea as well as in the air. He loved the outdoors and getting “off the beaten path,” and could often be found paddling or fly fishing with his dog at his side.In his personal life, Skip was deeply devoted to his family and friends. He was known for his infectious smile, his gift for storytelling, and his willingness to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. Skip lived with a zest for life and a constant thirst for knowledge, always eager to share his experiences and wisdom to enrich the lives of those around him. He was the keeper of those he loved, something he took immense pride in—whether offering open arms, a listening ear, or words of wisdom.
