Paul A. Sylvia, 74, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated Professional Engineer, passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday, November 21, 2024. He was the devoted husband of Linda (Benevides) Sylvia, with whom he shared 52 years of profound love and laughter before his passing.
Born in Fall River, MA and raised in Bristol by the late Anthony and Evelyn (De Costa) Sylvia, Paul's love for Narragansett Bay began in his youth, spending countless hours boating with his father, Tony, and step-mother, Ginny, around Potter's Cove. It was at Bristol High School in 1967 where he met the love of his life, Linda, and was warmly embraced as an "adopted son" by her parents, John and Mary "Bubbles" Benevides of Narrows Road.
After graduating from Roger Williams College in 1972, Paul married Linda and began a distinguished career in engineering that would span over four decades. He was the owner-operator of SRH Corporation for many years and his expertise helped shape many of Rhode Island's landmarks and infrastructure through projects including Veterans Memorial Auditorium, Providence Wastewater Treatment Plant, Linden Place and various wind turbines on Aquidneck Island. He served with distinction as Bristol's Town Engineer and on the Building Board of Review.
For the last four years, Paul found great fulfillment as Superintendent of Water and Wastewater for the Town of Somerset, MA, a position he loved so deeply he often said he would never retire. His impact there was profound, as noted by officials: "Paul's leadership, understanding, and dedication brought about countless infrastructure improvements and an elevated work environment for all his employees," stated Town Administrator Mark Ullucci. Selectman Jamison Souza added, "His selfless devotion to our water and sewer departments has created a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations."
Paul's greatest pride and joy was his family. His love story with Linda was legendary he called her his "Birdess" and never missed a chance to tell her how much he loved her, sometimes teasing, "You're perfect, Birdie." Their adventures together, walking on the bike path with Rita, cruising in the Caribbean, or relaxing in the sun in the backyard, listening to reggae music with Paul enjoying his cigar and Sailor Jerry's were among his most treasured moments.
As a father, Paul was an irreplaceable source of wisdom and guidance for his children, Audrey and Aaron. He coached Aaron's soccer teams, mentoring countless young players who needed a strong role model a legacy Aaron continues today coaching his own son's team. Paul was teeming with pride at seeing Aaron follow in his footsteps as a professional engineer and coach.
With Audrey, Paul shared what he called "the gift" of being able to relate to, connect with and communicate effectively with people, which Audrey applies to her career in purpose marketing. Paul and Audrey had a very special bond, united by their shared sense of humor, creativity and ability to embrace the gray area. Paul never missed an opportunity to tout Audreys and Aarons accomplishments, proudly reporting that "all the old ladies were crying in the back row."
Pauls love for his grandchildren, Rachel and Henry his beloved "Gypsy" and "Stiggy" was limitless. He delighted in their achievements, from soccer games to robotics competitions, surrounding them with consistent love, laughter and tutelage to ensure they will have every opportunity to succeed. Simply, he was the proudest and very best Grampy to have ever walked on this earth.
A man of diverse interests, Paul was an avid Yankees fan, skilled ship model builder, and lifelong learner. His encyclopedic knowledge ranged from historical facts to etymology, from cooking techniques to the way things work, and he would often use his endless knowledge to challenge his kids and grandkids to reach further in their intellectual pursuits. He was a member of the East Warren Rod and Gun Club and loved to exercise, read, cook and spend time outside, on ships and near the water.
Paul is survived by his loving wife Linda; his children Audrey Sylvia (Jeffrey) and Aaron Sylvia (Dawn); his grandchildren Rachel and Henry Sylvia; his brothers David Sylvia and Craig Burrell; and many relatives and friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.
As is always the case with death, words cannot fully express the sorrow Pauls family feels over the loss of a truly great man who will live on in the vibrant and beautiful memories and legacy he leaves behind.
Daddy, we know that you are very much alive and rejoicing with God now. Until we are reunited with you in Heaven, we will take the very best care of YM.
Look out, God, he's "Comin' in hot." LDO.
