Paul Thomas Jr., Tlingit name Taaka, of the Dog Salmon House, passed away peacefully at his home in Angoon, Alaska on September 5, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born in Kake, Alaska on July 6, 1937, to Paul Thomas Sr. and Mary Thomas.
Paul proudly served his country in both the National Guard and the Army Reserve, dedicating five years to each. He also served his community as an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) responder, always willing to step up and help others in need. His life reflected a strong sense of duty, commitment, and care for those around him.
Throughout his long and hardworking life, Paul held many roles in Angoon, including Harbor Master, Water Plant Operator, commercial fisherman, Volunteer Firefighter for the Angoon Fire Department, and sports fisherman. After retirement, he cherished traveling to Wasilla to visit his children and grandchildren, always making time to connect with those he loved most.
Paul was a Corp Seargent Major in the Salvation Army. He was a dedicated Salvationist and looked forward to daily Bible study with his wife. One of his lifetime highlights was going to London for International Salvation Army Congress and loved to share his memories of his trip abroad.
Paul was preceded in death by his sons, Fenton and Kenneth; his ex-wife, Betty Torres; his sister, Virginia; his uncles, Paul Chulik, Paul James, and Pete McCluskey; his aunties, Isabel Chulik, Maggie James, and Liz McCluskey; and his parents, Paul Thomas Sr. and Mary Thomas.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Alice Thomas; his children, Joseph Thomas, Paul Thomas III, James Thomas, Starla Kendall, and Emma Jean Demmert; his grandchildren, Salena Thomas, Isaiah Thomas, Samuel Thomas, Brad Kendall, Natalia Kendall, Emma Manu-Thomas, and Emily Thomas; and his great grandchildren Janessa & Lola Thomas. He also leaves behind his brothers; Joe Johnson, Russell James, David James, and Elliott James, Paul James; his sisters, Evangeline Howard, Pamela James, and Lana James. He will be missed by many extended.
Paul will be remembered for his love of family, his generous spirit, and his joy for life. He especially enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren, and he never missed an opportunity to dance when he heard music. He loved to share hunting and fishing stories with people who stopped in to visit. His presence brought laughter, strength, and warmth to everyone around him.
