Paul John Tschida

Paul J. Tschida, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Jane, two daughters Anne and Ellen, son Daniel (Karen Janisch), grandchildren Audrey and Lizzy, and brother Greg (Sandy). He was preceded in death by parents John and Teresa Tschida and sister Mary Ann Biegler. Paul grew up in the West 7th Street neighborhood of St. Paul, and graduated from Cretin High School. He served in the US Army in Japan and on his return obtained a law degree from the University of Minnesota and joined the FBI, assigned to offices in California, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. He returned to Minnesota to be part of Hubert Humphrey's senatorial campaign, and subsequently became deputy Attorney General. He was appointed Superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and later Minnesota Commissioner of Public Safety. He retired after 8 years as VP of Health and Safety at the University of Minnesota, and also served as Board Chair of the Tubman Family Alliance.
Paul was never without a good book and passed his passion for reading and history on to his children. He was a loving husband for 62 years and a devoted father, known for his integrity, love of Democratic politics and the rule of law, as well as Twins baseball and Gopher sports (proudly going to the Rose Bowl game in 1961). He enjoyed lively conversation, corny jokes, and a dry martini. He was truly a man for all seasons.
