Paul Reeves Weigand, 64, passed away in his sleep at home on Friday, November 11, 2016. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 41 years, Carol Fanning Weigand; daughter, Sarah (Carey) McDonald, grandson, Julian James McDonald; son, Michael (Annie McDonnell) Weigand; sister, Ann (Edward) Weigand LaTour; sister, Mary Jane (Jeff) Weigand Tanaka; John (Jan) Weigand; sister-in-law, Kay (Chris McLaughlin) Fanning. He is also survived by nephews and nieces Philip and Maria LaTour, Steven Tanaka, Matthew and Molly Weigand, and Maya McLaughlin. Along with his human family, his loyal companion Lucy "Velcro" the vizsla will miss Paul tremendously. Born in Columbus, the son of Glenn and Mary Jean Weigand, Paul grew up in Akron, OH, where he attended Buchtel High School. Throughout his childhood he was active in Christ United Methodist Church of Akron, as well as the Boy Scouts of America where he was an Eagle Scout. Paul attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, where he met Carol in a pottery class. The two shared a special relationship full of love and admiration throughout their marriage. Paul completed his PhD in counselor education at Kent State University. Paul saw working as a psychologist as a calling to help people when they needed it the most. In 2003, Paul started his own private practice serving older adults and people living with disability in nursing homes across Northeast Ohio and with his brother John at Central Ohio Geriatrics. This work was his passion, with Paul always going above and beyond to improve his clients' quality of life. Paul worked tirelessly to provide not only for the basic needs of his family, but also to offer guidance, wisdom, and fun whenever possible. He loved the holidays and was the household sentimentalist. He was an active Dad, stepping up to cheer on his children at countless dance recitals, Hot Stove baseball games, and drama productions. He enjoyed the new role of GrandPaul and relished his relationship with his growing family. Paul was a man of many hobbies and interests including fishing, photography, Cleveland Indians baseball, cooking for loved ones, Ohio State football, bird watching, live music (especially at the Kent Stage), and woodworking. Please join in the celebration of Paul's life. Calling hours will be held from 10:00AM – 12:00PM Saturday, November 19th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home Crematory in Kent, with a memorial service at 12:00PM. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Kent Stage, the Portage Park District, or Allegheny College.

I just learned of Paul's passing today, August 20, 2017, after I sent an email to him that bounced back. I wondered why his email would not be in operation, so I sought information online, and to my great sorrow, I learned of his death. He was my supervisor for a year during a practicum during my doctoral training at Kent State.

I am profoundly sad that Paul died far too young. He was a wonderful supervisor and certainly is one of the best, if not the best, supervisors I ever had. He was a kind, thoughtful, generous man.

To Paul's family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I've only known Paul a few years, since Sarah married my son Carey. But in that short time I began to appreciate his great gifts, and his kindness and generosity. He will be missed in so many ways. I know Carol and Sarah and Mike are all bereft. Life without him will be the poorer.

As a family member who knew and loved Paul from the day he was born, there are so many stories I could (and will!) tell that reinforce my admiration and respect for him. For example, everyone else in the family loved the Weigand Lakeside cottage and stayed there as a guest, cherishing the beauty and spirit of the place. Except Paul. His values made it hard for him to go to a private club in spite of the fact that it would have been easier for him to button his lip and simply attend family events there out of respect for his parents. I was older than he was, but that courage to stand up for his core values taught me a lesson. Thank you, Paul.

My sincere condolences go to Carol and Paul's family and loved ones. His passing is very sad for all of us who knew him. I've known Paul since Jr High and though we didn't stay that close as adults I have very fond memories of times spent with Paul. He was an excellent photographer which was a common bond we shared. We also had very similar tastes in music. I vividly remember attending a Grateful Dead concert and a Steve Miller Band concert at Allegheny College in the early 70's while Paul was an undergrad there. I learned how to drive a stick shift from Paul prior to taking a summer road trip to Acadia National Park in Maine with another friend, John Meyer and enjoyed my first taste of Rum with Paul while on the beach at Campobello Island. Good times. I'll miss you, Paul.
