Paula Cichanowicz Obituary

Paula B. Cichanowicz

Hatfield, MA - Paula B. Cichanowicz, 78, of Hatfield, peacefully passed away after a brief illness, with her husband by her side, on Wednesday July 2, 2025, at Linda Manor Nursing Home. She was born in Springfield, MA on July 29, 1946, to the late Paul Kasemeotos and Jean (Lezynski) Kasemeotos.

She was a graduate of Northampton High School class of 1964 and continued her education at Holyoke School of Business. In high school, Paula met and quickly fell in love with Charlie Cichanowicz Jr., they were high school sweethearts and married on October 23, 1965. The couple honeymooned in Niagara Falls; they jumped in the car and made the trip by way of Lebanon Valley Speedway. Paula loved corvettes and had several, her mother and her enjoyed road trips throughout the valley. Paula, worked for UMass in the art department, and the Shade Tree lab, for 40 years before her retirement.

In 1977, they built their home in Hatfield, where their backyard was full of all kinds of wildlife. Paula had a great fondness for all animals, and would always care for orphaned raccoons, skunks, and especially her favorite, squirrels. She nursed and cared for Pudgy the Squirrel, who had a broken back, front wheel drive and fast. She rehabilitated him back to health and he continued to live to be 11 years old.

Paula loved antique shopping, scouring tag sales, collecting glass, and was always on the hunt for beautiful pieces of jewelry. She enjoyed reading and spending a week or two on the Cape in Hyannis.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Charlie Cichanowicz Jr. of Hatfield, several cousins, many dear friends and her furry companion, her dog Ziggy, I'm sure he will be happy to see her again.

There will be a calling hour on Friday July 11, 2025, from 10 AM – 11 AM at the DROZDAL FUNERAL HOME, 120 DAMON RD., NORTHAMPTON. A prayer service will begin in the Funeral Home at 11 AM. Burial will immediately follow in Calvary Cemetery, Hatfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paula's memory to Mass Bird of Prey Rehab, C/O Tom Ricardi, 71 N. Poland Rd. Conway, MA 01341.

Paula and I worked in the same department at UMass for several years. I remember her as the sweet, smiling blond lady at the reception desk at Shade Tree Labs. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, and always gushed about her husband, "My Charlie." I went to their house once to see some orphaned racoon babies she was caring for. Both the human and animal worlds have lost a lovely, kind and caring soul. Thanks to her family for sharing her with all of us.
