The youngest of 11 children, Peggy was born at Duke Hospital in Durham on March 20, 1945. She was a 1963 graduate of Hillsborough High School and a graduate of Croft Business College in Durham. In addition, she graduated magna cum laude from UNC-Charlotte. Employment included UNC-Chapel Hill for 2 years, several federal agencies for 18 years, and Duke Energy for 10 years, retiring in 2000.
On March 21, 1965, she and Calvin Johnson were married at Mars Hill Baptist Church. They were married for 59 years. Both of them enjoyed golf, with some of their best vacations spent playing golf together at Myrtle Beach and Maggie Valley. In addition, she had a number of hobbies which included Photography, Scrapbooking, Flower Arranging, painting crafts and on canvas, jig-saw puzzles, decorating cakes, and baking Christmas cookies to give away. They were both animal lovers as well with many dogs and cats. In their retirement years, they enjoyed the peacefulness of living on Lake Orange surrounded by nature.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Calvin, her sisters, Mary Alice Hall and Betty Gera, her many nieces and nephews, and her great and great-great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Lee Joseph and Mary Hutchins Byrd, her brothers, Raymond (Bud), Commie (Com), William (Bill), Lee Roy (Chub), and Norman, and her sisters, Leona Williams (Sal), Shirley Neville (Shirl), and Gloria Brook (Goma).
Services will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Mars Hill Baptist Church, 1418 NC Hwy 57, Hillsborough. The visitation will take place at 1:00PM followed by the funeral service at 2:00PM. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
