Peggy Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Funeral Alternatives of Maine - Brunswick on Feb. 17, 2026.
Brunswick- Peggy B. Smith, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, died February 9, 2026. She was born in Kennebunk on March 1, 1936, and lived on a farm with her mom and grandparents for a few years before the family moved to Wells, Maine into a tiny house her father, a lobsterman, had built for their family which had grown to include her younger brother, Gordon "Sonny" Bridges.

After she graduated from Wells High School, Peggy became the first person in her family to attend college. She graduated from Westbrook College in 1956, earning an associate's degree in retail management. After working in Portland for a year, she married her high school and college sweetheart G. Cameron Smith in 1957. They ultimately settled in Topsham with their three children: Laurie, Lisa and Peter.

Peggy became lifelong friends with several women in the neighborhood after they found a shared love for both childrearing and bridge. This close group of friends played bridge together for over 60 years. They went to each other's children's weddings, giving them all the "bridge group gift" of a floor lamp to support each child by giving them light for their journeys. These friends continued playing even after losing some of their number to illness, but they continued to add others.

Theatre was in the blood of all the Smiths, and Peggy walked with all three children to Bowdoin College from Topsham daily every summer while the kids appeared in various roles at the Brunswick Music Theatre-now MSMT. The whole family took to the stage with the G & S Society of Maine as it went through the entire Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire in the 70's and 80's.

Books were her passion, and Peggy worked in the library at the brand-new Mt. Ararat School when it opened in the fall of 1973. She worked there until she took a position as library associate at the Curtis Memorial Library in 1980. She retired in 2019.

She and Cameron moved to Coastal Landings in January of 2020. After her husband died, she became a Landings "gamer" known for her multiple wins at Bingo, Rummikubes, and Bridge. As her vision deteriorated from macular degeneration, she just switched to large-print edition books, and larger playing cards!

Peggy was predeceased by her husband, G. Cameron Smith.

She is survived by her children: Laurie Smith Lemley and her spouse Brad in Phoenix, AZ, Lisa Smith Fry and her spouse Gwen in Brunswick, ME, and Peter Cameron Smith and his spouse, Lisa in Hackettstown, NJ, as well as her three grandchildren: Alex Lemley, Zoe Fry Lacey, and Thomas Smith.

She will be greatly missed by friends and family.

There will be a Celebration of Life at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Brunswick with a reception following on Friday, March 20 at 1:00pm.

Everyone is most welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Hillhouse Assisted Living in West Bath, where she spent her final days, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brunswick, or the Curtis Memorial Library, also in Brunswick.

Dear Family of Peggy Smith,
I became a friend of Peggy´s through St. Paul´s Church, as I brought the altar flowers to her. She was one of the sweetest women I knew, always so grateful and kind. I could see how much she had loved all of you. We looked back with fondness the memories I had of your father and grandfather, Cam, who shared his amazing musical talents with us at St. Paul´s. I will miss this lovely woman.

To Laurie, Lisa,Peter and other family members and friends, you have our sincere sympathies after Peggy´s passing. I was privileged to be able to see her periodically and I´ll miss seeing a member of the long-enduring bridge group and sharing some of those memories.
