In Loving Memory of Penny Atchley

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of Penny Atchley, who peacefully went home in her sleep on February 21.

Penny was born on November 14, 1958, in Decatur, Alabama, to Robert and Dolories Whaley. From the very beginning, her life was rooted in family, faith, and love, values she carried with her every day.

Penny was a woman whose love knew no limits. She was more than the titles she carried. She was the heart of her family. A devoted mother, cherished daughter, proud Granny, and caring sister, she had a way of making everyone feel seen, valued, and at home. To know her was to feel cared for. To be loved by her was a true gift.

She is survived by her loving mother, Dolories Whaley; her children, Miranda (Robbie) Rainwater, Earl Mason, Samuel (Brittany) Mason, Dolories (Roderick) Moton, and Mary Opal (Chad) Tubbs; and her sisters, Ginger Whaley, Sandy (Tim) Johnson, Donna Butler, and Mary Charles Whaley. Each of them carries forward her strength, her warmth, and her steady, unwavering love. Her legacy continues through her eleven beloved grandchildren, who were the light of her life and brought her immeasurable pride and joy.

Penny was preceded in death by her husband, Ronnie Van Atchley, and her father, Robert Whaley. While we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with them, her absence here leaves a space that can never truly be filled.

She loved endlessly, forgave quickly, and gave without hesitation. She continuously looked after others, always placing the needs of those she loved above her own. Her home was a safe place. Her arms were always open. She prayed quietly, celebrated loudly, and stood firm in her devotion to her family. Her strength was steady. Her kindness was constant.

Though our hearts ache in her absence, we are grateful she left this world peacefully. The love she poured into her family and friends will continue to guide and comfort us. Her laughter, her compassion, and her beautiful spirit will never be forgotten.

Penny's life was a testament to unconditional love, the kind that does not fade with time. Her legacy lives on in every story shared, every lesson remembered, and every life she touched.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
