Peter William Bundschuh died October 27, 2024, at the age of 68, of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Pete was born to the late John and Anna Bundschuh in Rochester, NY on December 15, 1955. He grew up in Penfield, NY, and attended Dartmouth College where he majored in Biology and met his loving wife of 43 years, Alexis-Ann (Lex) Bundschuh (née Bond). After Dartmouth, Pete earned an MBA from the University of Michigan. In 1984, Pete and Lex settled in Hollis, New Hampshire, where they raised their two children, John Adikes Bundschuh and Kristine Alexis Bundschuh.
Pete was predeceased by his brother, William Bundschuh. He is survived by his wife and best friend Lex, son Johnny (Yuri), daughter Kristine, and grandchildren Keigo, Ayane, and a granddaughter due in November. He is also survived by his brothers John (Debbie) and Paul (Judith), sisters-in-law Kris (Barry) and Marj, Lex's siblings Barbara (Jeffrey), Beth (Mark), and James (Jason), and many loving relatives in the Bundschuh, Bond, Roberts, Simons, and Heiser families.
Pete was passionate about spending time outdoors. He was a Boy Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He started cross-country skiing in high school where he raced on his school's team, then at Dartmouth he was the director of the Nordic Ski School, and he continued to cross-country ski with his family, most recently with Kristine this past spring throughout Grand County, Colorado. Pete was an avid hiker from a young age, summiting all the 4,000 footers in the Northeast. Through the Dartmouth Outing Club, Pete enjoyed hiking, canoeing, camping, being involved in conservation and outdoor stewardship efforts, competing on the Dartmouth Woodsmen's Team, and forging many lifelong friendships. In his early twenties, Pete started orienteering, where he not only competed in the sport, but also was an active organizer of countless events and supported the sport both locally and nationally. Pete was a founding member of Up North Orienteers, and he developed many close friendships with fellow orienteers.
After Pete worked in finance for software companies for decades, he enjoyed over ten years of retirement adventures. Pete and Lex took annual dive trips around the world in retirement, often accompanied by their daughter Kristine. They also went on "walk-abouts," from pilgrimages in Japan when visiting Johnny and his family to treks in Scotland and Ireland. Multi-day bike trips became a favorite activity, beginning with biking the entire Erie Canal Trail, which included cycling through his mother's hometown of Medina, NY. Pete learned to downhill ski when he began volunteering at New England Healing Sports Association (NEHSA) with Lex. From adaptive kayaking in the summer to adaptive skiing in the winter, Pete helped hundreds of others access and experience outdoor sports. Always looking for new ways to enjoy nature, Pete started geocaching only two years ago. Since then, he and Lex have found nearly 1500 geocaches across the United States and in Ireland, Canada, the Bahamas, and Grenada. He also took the lead in gathering his extended family together on numerous occasions.
Pete was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be dearly missed. He always enjoyed taking his children, and later grandchildren, on walks and sharing his knowledge of plants and wildlife with them. From being the main cook in the household to hosting an annual "Camp Grammie & Grandpa" for Keigo and Ayane, Pete was always taking care of his family. His wordplay, puns, and "Uncle Pete" jokes were legendary.
Donations may be made in Pete's memory to Beaver Brook Association, Hollis, NH and New England Healing Sports Association, Newport, NH.
Pete's Celebration of Life will be held in New Hampshire in April, 2025.
