When I hear someone referred to with words like humble, kind, hardworking, responsible, dedicated, and, above all, friend, I think of Pete. Pete was all of that and much more. I can say that the time we worked together was, without a doubt, one of the best I've ever had. Although, like everything, it wasn't easy to gain his trust at first, spending so much time together at work gave us the opportunity to get to know each other, get along, and become friends. We shared many experiences-life experiences on his part, and travels and adventures on my part. Working with Pete was like being on your favorite sports team; you knew you could count on him because you knew his moves, and he knew yours.
The fact that he was also a bit naive meant that each day ended with, if not one, at least a few fun adventures that I will remember with joy.
He liked to bet and challenge you, both verbally and by shaking your hand. I don't gamble, but he was so persistent that he convinced me to accept his bets. The funny thing was that from the beginning-I don't know why, maybe it was the universe-I always won, and he ended up furious, wanting revenge, but always losing. Still, instead of harboring animosity, that created the beginning of our friendship. Gambling wasn't the only thing; there were many moments, simple things, that ultimately created stories to remember.
I remember one time we were sorting cars in a parking lot. I saw one had a flat tire, and Pete asked Tony to pump it up with the new compressor we'd just bought. Tony didn't know how to start it, so Pete got out of the minivan to help him, but he couldn't start it either. I tried to get out of the van a couple of times to help, but Pete closed the door on me and, with a straight face, said, "No, stay put." I was laughing because I knew he wanted to prove he could do it without my help, while Tony watched and chuckled. After several attempts, he finally opened the door for me and said, "Well, tell us how to start it." I only did one thing: leaned over and pressed a button right in front of the compressor box, that for some reason they couldn't see it. As soon as the compressor started, Pete looked up at the sky and yelled, "Why, why?" Then he turned around, put his hands on my neck, shook me, and said, "One of these days, DJ, one of these days."
I am grateful to have enjoyed his company during the final part of his life's journey.
We will definitely miss him. I know I will.
