Obituary of Shirley Marlene Flom
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley 'Mickey' Flom at the age of 92, of New Brighton, Minnesota, who passed away peacefully on June 10th, 2025. Mickey was born on June 22nd, 1932, in Fargo, North Dakota, to her mother and father, Olga Bertelson Lund and Irving Lund. After graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College, Mickey spent her entire career helping families in need, while working as a social worker for Hennepin County. The list of people she helped through terribly difficult times would fill a book. She was a beloved sister, aunt, friend, 'mother and grandmother'. Mickey was known for her adventurous spirit, wonderful generosity, fabulous sense of humor, and steel-minded stubbornness, to which all who knew her can attest and anyone who ever played cribbage with her found out. Besides loving her family, she loved driving her car, going to the casino, and acting as an Uber driver for her entire family at one time or another. If any of us needed Mickey, she would be there immediately. She is survived by her best friend and caregiver, Betzy McCulloch, best friends for 65 years, and Betzy's children, who became her family: George (Pat) McCulloch, Steven (Cindy) McCulloch, Patricia (Mike) Hamel, granddaughters Alisha Hamel and Marilee McCulloch. She's also survived by her siblings Darryl Lund and Patricia Kirmeier. Nieces and nephews Alan Kirmeier, Jason Kirmeier, Kristen Kirmeier, and Kari Carstensen, who can attest to her being the most caring, giving and fun-loving sister and aunt there could be.
A private Memorial for the family will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice in Shirley's name.
