Peter Michael Garaventa, 72 currently residing in Candler, NC passed away unexpectedly on February 11, 2026 from a tragic vehicle incident. Pete was born in McDowell County on February 7, 1954. He grew up in the North Cove community and was a long time resident of Marion. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Elwanda Vance Braswell and William Michael Garaventa, and brother Kenneth Garaventa.
Also preceding him in death was a very special brother-in-law Howard Hudgins who Pete described as another father, brother, teacher and best friend. Howard inspired Pete’s love of nature. Nothing thrilled Pete more than a hike in the mountains, a motorcycle ride on the Parkway or fishing in the mountain streams. He knew the names of the area's mountain peaks and appreciated all of God’s creation which he loved photographing. He was a collector of many things including arrowheads and coins. Pete was an avid reader. Rarely was he seen without a book or magazine in his hands. He enjoyed learning and sharing his knowledge through conversation with those around him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son with whom he was so proud of, Joseph Michael Garaventa and wife Katie, grandchildren Kylee and Johnathan Osborne, sisters Carolyn Hudgins, and Norma Jean Maynard, a special niece Denise Hudgins White, and fiancee Sandy Champion.
Pete will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. His untimely death reminds us to appreciate those around us each day and respect and celebrate God’s creation just as he did.
