Peter M. Gerrits of Carmel, IN, passed away on May 21, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born in Ferguson, MO, on October 20, 1937, to parents, Martin J. and Nellie L. (Hall) Gerrits. For most of his childhood he lived in St. Clair, MI.
A loving husband and father, Peter worked hard for his family. He was a dedicated bus driver with a spotless safety record in Los Angeles, CA and was a member of the United Transportation Union. A Navy veteran, Peter served our country during peaceful times as an electrician on the USS Esperance. He enjoyed working on household projects and was talented in that area. Peter loved WW II history and could name the make, model and year of just about any classic car he saw.
He is survived by daughters, Gina (Jim) Chinni, Maria McIntyre; stepchildren, Kathleen Crowley, JK (Lisa) Crowley; grandchildren, Garret (Maria) Chinni, Carolyn German, Claire (Matt) Dempsey, Abigail (Ryan) Weiss, Michael Bilik, Daniel Bilik, Timothy Bilik, Kaylia McIntyre, Gabriela McIntyre; Great Grandchildren, Anthony German, Abel Dempsey, Atlas Weiss.
He was preceded in death by wife of 13 years, Carolyn Gerrits, and wife of 27 years Donna Gerrits; his daughter Michelle Bilik and stepson Michael Crowley; his loving parents; and siblings, Mary Lou Schmarrow, James Gerrits, David Gerrits, Barbara Marks, and Ellen O’Toole.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to a charity of your choice in Peter's honor.A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:30am, Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Our Lady Mount Carmel Catholic Church (14598 Oak Ridge Rd. Carmel, IN 46032).
