Peter Hennessey passed away peacefully at Chinook Hospice on February 27, 2026, at the age of 87 in Calgary, Alberta. He was born in Merasheen, Newfoundland.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Aline (2018); his parents, Mary and Edward (Ned); his brothers John, Joe, Peter, Edward, and Leo; his sister Mary; his mother- and father-in-law, Rosa and Joseph Chatelain; brothers-in-law Raymond, Wally, and Pat; and sisters-in-law Lise, Mary, and Geraldine.
Peter is survived by his children Diane, Peter (Paula), and Wayne; and his grandchildren Toni, Patrick (Ayla), Ryan, and Daniel (Shelby). He was proud of his great-grandsons Lincoln and Ari. He leaves behind his sisters Mercedes, Lucy, and Laura; his brother Patrick (Liz); sister-in-law Nicole; brother-in-law Michel Chatelain (Veronica); and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Merasheen, Peter joined the Royal Canadian Armed Forces in 1958. His service took him to Winnipeg, Ottawa, Germany, and Cold Lake before he settled in Calgary in 1978. After retiring from the military, he worked with Canada Post for another 15 years. He was active in the Fish and Game Club and local entertainment committees. In his younger years, Peter enjoyed curling, bowling, fishing, camping, and supporting his children’s sports.
Later in life, Peter and Aline embraced skiing with their family. They purchased a cabin and boat, allowing them to spend summers enjoying Merasheen—fishing, sightseeing, visiting lifelong friends, sharing home-cooked meals, hosting kitchen parties, and enjoying the occasional drink.
Peter cherished time spent with family and friends, whether at the legion, at hockey games, or gathered around the table for family dinners.
He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Peter will be laid to rest in Merasheen with his loving wife, Aline, at a later date.
Celebration of Life to be held in Calgary on Saturday March 14th (1:00-4:00pm) at the Forest Lawn Legion (Branch 275: 755 40 Street SE).
