Peter E. Johnson, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Jack Byrne Center on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Peter was born and raised in North Haverhill, where he grew up working on his family's dairy farm – a foundation that shaped his strong work ethic and lifelong love of the outdoors. He graduated from Keene State College in 1967 and began his career in education, serving as Head of the Math Department at Lebanon High School. During his time there, he also coached varsity boys' soccer and baseball, mentoring countless students both in the classroom and on the field.
Peter later transitioned from teaching to entrepreneurship, becoming a contractor and founding Johnson's Home Center in 1973. This venture marked the beginning of both a successful business career and a lifelong friendship and partnership with Paul Korpela. He owned and operated the building supply store for twenty years before transforming the property into what is now the Staples plaza in West Lebanon.
In 1975, Peter and Paul Korpela co-founded K&J Associates, playing a significant role in the development of the Route 12A corridor in West Lebanon. Their collaboration left a lasting impact on the community and exemplified the strength of their shared vision.
In 1984, Peter founded Fore-U Golf Center, a business that remains family-operated today by his daughters, Jennifer and Meredith. Before fully dedicating himself to golf, Peter played competitive softball for many years, ultimately agreeing to give it up if his wife Anne would take up golf with him-a decision that sparked a shared passion they enjoyed for decades. A dedicated golfer, Peter, took up the game at age 32 and worked diligently to achieve a handicap as low as a four. He also served for many years on the Board of Directors of the New Hampshire Golf Association.
Peter was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life, with fishing remaining a cherished pastime in his later years. He also treasured time spent in Florida, where he and his wife Anne enjoyed 25 winters, making lasting friendships and welcoming visits from family.
Above all, he found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. He will be fondly remembered for his warm smile, quick wit, sense of humor, and the gentle, calm presence that drew people and animals alike to him. Peter's laughter, kindness, and love of life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Anne; his children, Mark (Melissa), Jennifer, and Meredith (Dan); his five grandchildren, Alexandra, Hayden, Andrew, Liza, and Landon; his sister, Barbara MacNamee; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elmore and Emma Johnson, and his sister, Patricia Chase.
A celebration of life for friends and family will be held later this year at Fore-U Golf Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Pete's memory to the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care, 154 Hitchcock Loop Rd,
Lebanon, NH 03766.
