Peter Luea Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mills Funeral Home, Shelly-Odell Chapel - Eaton Rapids on Aug. 7, 2025.
Dr. Peter John Luea of Dimondale,

Went home to be with the Lord on August 4, 2025, at the age of 53. Peter was born in Lansing, Michigan on September 29, 1971, the son of Michael and Barbara (Sibilsky) Luea. He graduated from Everett High School in 1989 where he excelled in academics, serving as class president for two years, and was a multi-sport athlete, making his mark in track and field, basketball, and football. Inspired by physicians in his youth, Peter earned his Bachelor of Science in physiology from Michigan State University and went on to complete his medical degree at the University of Michigan. As a family physician with McLaren Health Care, Peter was well-respected by his colleagues and loved by his many patients, many of whom sought his expertise on Natural Family Planning and Catholic medical ethics. Peter was a proud advocate of the pro-life movement and an active member of the Catholic Medical Association.

Peter married the one and only love of his life, Susan Derengoski, in 1997, and together they raised and home schooled nine children, enjoying 28 beautiful years of marriage. A man of profound faith and on fire with the Holy Spirit, Peter was a visionary for evangelism of his peers at a young age. Peter was an active parishioner at St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids, an instrumental leader in the Work of Christ Community in Lansing, and served youth internationally through the Sword of the Spirit. A volunteer coach for CHAP (Capital Homeschool Athletic Program) track and field and basketball, and a mentor to many, Peter had a passion for inspiring young people to realize and achieve their full potential in the Lord through sports, music, and prayer.

Peter was an avid fisherman and loved vacationing with his family at his cottage in East Tawas where he enjoyed trail running with his kids, rollerblading, kayaking, working on projects and cross country skiing. His goofy and bold sense of humor brought laughter and joy to every situation. Everything he put his mind to he excelled at, but to Peter, being a husband and father was his crowning achievement. At home, he could be found spending time with his wife and children, taking on new hobbies, or sharing stories with everyone around him. Peter had a knack for landscape and design and was often seen "doctoring" the trees in his own yard and those of his neighbors. He used his creative gifts as a way to honor God and build community through songwriting. Several of his worship songs are loved internationally and have led many to a deeper experience of God's love and power.

Peter is survived by his wife, Susan (Derengoski) Luea; children, Elizabeth (Jack) Kirwan, Maria Luea, Veronica (John) Gulock, Therese Luea, Stephen Luea, Francis Xavier Luea, Lucy Luea, Daniel Luea, Martin Luea; grandson, Taylor Kirwan; parents, Michael and Barbara (Sibilsky) Luea; siblings, Daniel (Bernice) Luea, Bridget (Mike) Roe, Timothy (Michelle) Luea, Jonathan (Cristin) Luea, Christopher (Linda) Luea.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, 955 Alton Rd, East Lansing MI 48823. Visitation will be held at the Mills Funeral Home, Shelly-Odell Chapel, Monday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 pm. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the Funeral Mass at the Church.
