Peter Maughan Obituary

Peter Elvin Maughan

1934 ~ 2023

Holladay, UT – Peter Elvin Maughan slipped through the veil with humility, peace and his sense of humor intact, surrounded by family on February 25, 2023. Peter's family and friends gathered with him in his final weeks to reciprocate the same love and kindness he gave throughout his life. He was reunited with his parents Elvin F. and Elfriede K. Maughan, sisters Kathryn A. Pyrah (Ted) and Mary H. Maughan, along with countless Air Force compatriots, many who gave their lives in the service of our country.

Born on the Presidio of San Francisco on November 25, 1934, he grew up immersed in military culture. He lived on posts in California, Washington, Panama, Washington D.C., Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, and during WWII in Logan, Utah, where he called home. He followed in the footsteps of his father in joining the Air Force with plans to become a pilot. During his training at Paine AFB, his life was miraculously preserved when he ejected from a plane that crashed seconds later. That single event changed the course of his life as he was no longer eligible to become a Pilot due to the injuries he sustained, and instead became a Navigator. After 8 years in Labrador and France he left active duty to join the Utah Air National Guard. For the next 14 years, his assignments took him to Tokyo, Hawaii, Vietnam, Germany, Turkey, and the Congo, among other places. His deeply intuitive sense of direction not only served him as a Navigator but also guided his daily life as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

After 20 exciting years in the Air Force, he returned to Brigham Young University to finish his studies. Upon graduating, his profession took him to multiple Development Offices within Utah including the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Weber State, Ballet West, and Salt Lake Community College.

His days of bachelorhood happily ended at the age of 46 when he married Joyce Snow in the Salt Lake Temple on September 26, 1981 and became an instant father to her children Jeff and Suzy. To his delight, Eliza, Jon, and Mia joined their family soon after. When their family outgrew Peter's longtime bungalow on Wander Lane in Holladay, Utah, they moved half a block away to their current home. His gentle and upbeat personality created a loving and warm home where friends and family gathered often, and people felt welcome.

Peter served his Savior Jesus Christ in various capacities faithfully for over 50 years as a member of the Holladay 28th Ward. Many people he served and served alongside became dear friends. He loved being an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. Additionally, he served in the Church Welfare/Employment Center and in the Church History Museum. Together with Joyce, they served a Church Service Mission in the Conference Center and a Military Relations Mission in the Washington, Tacoma Mission. They also enjoyed traveling the world with dear friends.

We'll never forget Peter's crooked pointer finger, big band music playing in the car, transistor radio accompanying him everywhere on house projects, good natured whistling, his "private stock" of favorite treats, and plethora of utilitarian hooks he installed everywhere. Peter fostered encouragement and love for those around him, never failing to share how very proud he was of them. He endeavored to live with charity, which is the pure love of Christ.

After enduring 4 years of kidney dialysis, he reluctantly leaves behind Joyce, his wife of 41 years, and his children Jeffrey Ralph Goates (Megan), Suzanne Joyce Goates, Eliza Snow Bagley (Thomas), Jonathan Peter Maughan (Taryn), and Emilie "Mia" Eleanore Meier (Devin), 15 beloved grandchildren, his sister Janet Coleman (Mac) and many nieces and nephews. His solace in leaving was knowing that his family will be reunited again because of the atonement of Jesus Christ.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 4, from 10:30 am to 11:45 pm, with funeral services immediately following at 12:00 pm at the Holladay 28th Ward on 2625 Milo Way. Immediately following the funeral service Peter wished for all funeral guests to join together for an "ice cream social." Interment at Holladay Memorial Park on 4900 S. Memory Lane.

The service will be livestreamed on the Goff Mortuary Facebook Page at the following link:

Joyce, I just read in the BYU Alumni Mag about Peter's passing and was so sorry that I didn't know and therefore couldn't attend the funeral. Please accept my regrets and condolences. Pete was a wonderful friend and roommate. Sorry not to have stayed closer in touch. I enjoyed our several evenings at your cabin and did see Pete several years ago by chance while attending a family wedding at the SL temple. I hope you are doing well. I was pleased to read that you are surrounded by a family that will take care of you. Especially pleased to learn that you and Peter had a son who will carry on his name. I would love to hear from you if you have a moment: 801-783-0393 or email.

I was lucky enough to serve with Peter in the Air National Guard in the late 60s and seventies. Though it has been years since I last saw him, I have many good memories on the C124s traveling many places. He will be greatly missed.

I worked with Peter at SLCC. In many ways he changed the course of my life, showing confidence in me as a stay-at-home mom going back into the workplace. He gave me many opportunities to grow and trusted my abilities. Even now, when I am happy about a success I've worked for, I imagine Peter rubbing his hands together with glee, a big smile on his face. I will forever be grateful to him for his kindness, compassion, and friendship.

Dear Joyce and Family,
We are so saddened to hear of Peter's passing. Such a wonderful member of our family who touched us with his lovely, deep voice, sense of humor in the face of trial, and his everlasting love of you and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Howard and I will always remember your "travel tour" visit to Santiago, Chile, while we were serving a mission in 2008...we'll look around for those fotos to share with the family!

We hope you feel wrapped in the arms of a loving Father in this hour. Carol and "Uncle" Howard Snow, American Fork UT

In reading his obituary and learning his parents names, I´m pretty sure his Mother lived two houses down from me when we first got married!!! Small world!
Love you Joyce and I am grateful for knowing you!

Peter was a great friend to both my wife, Carolyn Taylor, in singles ward days, and to me later on with Carolyn at the Salt Lake Temple. I look forward to meeting up with him again before too many years. He was, and still is, a very good man.

Peter, I was so fortunate to serve with you in the Salt Lake Temple. Your energy was always a lift to me. You worried when you would find me asleep on the bench in front of our lockers. We shared love of country, kidney decline, and most of all enthusiasm for the Lord's purposes. You are a very special friend. May Joyce and your family be blessed.

Thank you Peter for getting Don and many others involved in the Baptistry of the SL Temple. It was a highlight of his life. So glad to know you are happy and free of pain. Blessings to Joyce and your family. Much love, Don and Diane Adamson
