BALLSTON LAKE - Peter J. Messitt, 86, passed away peacefully September 11, 2025 at his residence, following a long illness.
Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Donald and Catherine Feeney Messitt; and brother of the late Mary Anne Messitt Mulcahy and Kathleen Messitt.
Peter began his working career at the Troy Record, where he was employed for 10 years, and then went on to work as a computer programmer for General Electric in Schenectady and Bridgeport, Conn., for 25 years. Thereafter, he worked for Wade McCabe in Latham for 15 years, until his retirement.
Peter was an avid and accomplished bowler who belonged to leagues at Alfa Lanes in Troy and Hometown Lanes in Mechanicville. He was a passionate sports fan, who especially loved watching his N.Y. Yankees and N.Y. Islanders. In his younger years, he played ice hockey, coached baseball and was a Scout Leader. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and taking trips to Maine.
Peter is survived by his loving wife, Maryann McCormack Messitt; by his beloved children, Donald G. Messitt and Lynda Marie Messitt. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9 a.m., from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes, and at 9:30 a.m., in the Church of the Holy Trinity. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, in Cohoes.
Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
