Peter Saitta Obituary

Visit the Barile Family Funeral Homes & Cremation Service - Stoneham website to view the full obituary.
Peter Saitta, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away suddenly on December 25th in his home. He was 81 years of age. Born on June 13, 1935 in the West End of Boston, Peter was the loving son of the late Frank Saitta and Frances (Arena) Saitta. Peter was a warm and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him. Peter was predeceased by his wife Jeanette (DeCillis) Saitta, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage, his brother, Anthony Saitta, his sister, Emily (Saitta) Laham. He is survived by his sister, Florence (Saitta) Rhoda and her husband William, his dear children, Laura J. Berg and her husband Robert and Frank J. Saitta and his fiancé Jan DeMeulenaere, his precious grandchildren, Kara J. Berg, Preston Saitta and Madyson Saitta; and his many nieces, nephews and friends whom he loved dearly. A graduate of Somerville High School and a veteran of the United States Army, he received his undergraduate degree and his Master's Degree in Physical Education from Boston University. Until his retirement, he was a much-loved teacher, basketball coach and administrator at Wakefield Memorial High School, Boston State College and Bunker Hill Community College, during which time he mentored thousands of students. For many of his students and athletes, he not only touched their hearts, he changed their lives, providing them the support and encouragement they needed to succeed in school and in life by instilling in them the importance of perseverance, character and community service. As an educator and coach, he understood that athletics were an extension of the classroom and that good coaching was good teaching. His student-athletes have and will continue to carry those lessons forward in their own lives, keeping his spirit alive. During the course of his career, Peter received numerous awards and accolades from his peers and local organizations, but his most prized possessions were his children, his precious grandchildren, his nieces, nephews and close friends. Despite his failing health, he was determined to continue his holiday traditions, reminding each and every member of his family that he had been thinking of them not only on Christmas, but in the days and weeks leading up to the holiday as he assembled his trademark "gift bags." A kind and generous man with a heart of gold, Peter always had a joke to tell and a song to sing. His love for his family, the way he lived his life, and his unending loyalty to his friends make his passing hard to bear but ensure that his memory will be eternal. Dear Loving and Gracious God, for sure the heavens are rejoicing and the angels are thrilled to welcome their newest member who is going to assemble the best heavenly basketball team possible. May he enjoy a wonderful reunion with family and friends who pre-deceased him and in particular, may he once again dance with his beautiful bride, Jan. Funeral from the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main St. (RT 28) STONEHAM Saturday, December 31st at 9am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Peter's Eternal Life in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St. Stoneham at 10am. Uncle Pete- Miss u & aunty

February 1, 2017

I was saddened to just hear of the passing of Peter Saitta, and would like to offer my sincere condolences to his children and family. I first met "Mr" Saitta when I was a freshman at Boston State College. He was my professor, my mentor, and my friend and was responsible for teaching and modelling the importance of a strong work ethic, and excellent teaching and coaching methodologies that lasted me during my lifetime career in physical education and coaching. During my four years at Boston State, when I ran into some personal as well as some financial difficulties, Mr. Saitta helped me out by allowing me to become his work study student under the Federal Student Aid Program. In reality, he took care and looked after me in every way possible so that I was able to complete my studies. Because of his mentoring, I was able to go on and pursue my Masters and PhD in Physical Education. The last time I saw him was when he and Mrs. Saitta attended my wedding in 1979. After that, my wife and I moved to Toronto and unfortunately due to distance we did not connect again. I will always be very grateful for everything he did for me, and I looked up to him as a tremendously influential person in my life.

I had the pleasure of working with Peter at Bunker Hill Community College where he was in charge of the athletic dept for student activities, and I was in the facilities dept. in charge of athletic fields. Peter and I shared some great times and accomplished alot despite not always having the resources needed to make the job easier. But somehow we always got the job done together , with a laugh an a smile while putting the needs of the student athletes first. My condolences to Peters family and friends, he will be missed. When I look out at the ball field he over saw the making off that now hosts many BHCC championships I'll think of Peter.

laura and Frank
I loved your father as a son would love a father. he was so gentle and kind and caring. It was always a pleasure taking trips with him to the casino and to our regular card games. He always thought of others before himself. He had told me many stories about his life his children and his grand children. We had so much in common. I remmeber all his phone calls as if it was yesterday. He would always call and say"Frankie! did i wake you up ,you sound like you were sleeping". I will never foget him he has made an everlasting impression on me.
God bless you and your Family

I worked with Pete for many years at bunker hill community college. He was admired and adored by the students he helped. I remember he would come in my office with students and get them whatever they needed to be successful. Rest in peace Peter.

I met Pete, Coach Saitta, at Boston State College during tryouts for the J.V. Team which he coached. It was the Best team I had ever played on up to this point in my career. We went undefeated that year 21-0 and it was the best "Team" I was ever part of and that was a direct result of Coach Saitta's style and influence ...GOD BLESS HIM and may he Rest in peace.

My mother, son and I had the pleasure of having Peter come into our lives only recently, but I can say for certain that he made a lasting impression on us. He was so much fun to chat with and listen to his stories. I'm certain he will be missed by many, many people who's lives he touched over the years.

I'm grateful to have met him if only for a brief time, it was an honor and a pleasure to meet such a wonderful man. I only wish that we had more time to spend with him and gotten to know him better. The rest of our family was looking forward to meeting him on Christmas Day, which was not to be unfortunately.

I can honestly say that my life was enriched by knowing such a kind and generous soul.

May he rest in peace.

Peter - The depth of your mentoring and guide cannot be over stated. My most cherished childhood memories working for you up at the Sam Jones Basketball Camp will never be forgotten, nor will those Peggy Lawton Choco-Chip Cookies that you rewarded us kids when we did a good job. I often reflect and speak of those days with proud and joyful tears. Thank you for all that you gave of your time, your knowledge, and your heart, while quietly paving the way to not only my success, but also to the successes of your children, your grandchildren, and all of those you coached and taught throughout your educational tenure. Without a doubt, I know that you will continue to share your light while in the Lords arms, and I know you will map out the best possible play for each of us in your spiritual playbook.

Acts 20:20
And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you, and taught you publicly, from house to house.
