Peter H. "Pete" Thanos, 74, of Manteno, passed away Saturday (July 13, 2024), at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee.
He was born Sept. 5, 1949, in Chicago, the son of Harry and Abigail (St. George) Thanos. Peter married Bernadine "Bernie" Steffen on June 17, 1972, at St. Cajetan Church in Chicago.
Peter was an avid train collector. He was a huge Chicago sports fan and enjoyed watching the Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Blackhawks.
He was a teacher and a coach who received several awards for his coaching and teaching including, Chicago Public Schools Coach of the Year, Chicago Bears Coach of the Week and the prestigious Johnny Lattner award for Excellence in Coaching.
Peter also coached at St. Barnabas School, Mendel Catholic High School, St. Francis de Sales High School, Bogan High School, Percy Julian High School and Gwendolyn Brooks High School, all in Chicago.
He was a teacher at St. Barnabas, Mendel Catholic, St. Francis de Sales and a librarian at Julian High School in Chicago. He was awarded the Suave Corporation Teacher of the Year Award.
He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Manteno.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Bernadine; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa (Jason) Thanos Harrod, of Manteno, and Rebecca (Eric) Thanos Benson, of Elmhurst; one brother and sister-in-law, Daniel (Rhonda) Thanos, of Arizona; six grandchildren, Nathan Harrod, Connor Harrod, Karlie Harrod, Paul Benson, Peter Benson and Maggie Benson; one sister-in-law, Kathy Hincks, of Chicago; and numerous loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and one brother, John Thanos.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home, Manteno. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 19, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Manteno, with the Rev. Thomas Theneth officiating.
Cremation rites will be accorded following Mass.
