Peter Thompson
It is with profound sadness that the family of Peter Thompson, age 81, of Heritage Circle, Southbury, longtime former resident of Waterbury's East End, shares the news of his peaceful passing in the comfort of his home, surrounded by those he loved, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, after an extended illness. He was the devoted husband of Catherine "Kay" (Reagan) Thompson.
Peter was born on February 1, 1944, in Waterbury, the son of the late Raymond Lloyd and Elise (Walsh)Thompson. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School and High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and returned as a disabled veteran of the Vietnam Era. Following his service to our country, Pete went to work for 10 years in the construction industry and then joined the United States Postal Service where he worked as a mail processing machine mechanic for 38 years. He volunteered at Saints Peter and Paul School, which helped him to earn the prestigious H.O.P.E.S. award. He was also a Eucharist minister for the parish.
He found his greatest joy in time spent with family and friends. Whether it was a family vacation, a holiday gathering, Sunday dinner, or a summer pool party, Pete's laughter, warmth, and easygoing spirit made every occasion brighter. He loved the simple pleasures in life: sunny days with the windows down, oldies blaring from his truck, and evenings spent by a fire with a cocktail in hand. He was a kind-hearted man, who showed love through quiet gestures. He had a special talent for working with his hands and took great pride in woodworking, home projects, and tinkering around the house. There was never a project too big, or a day too long, when good company and a sense of humor were involved.
Even in times of illness and suffering, Pete never complained. His gentle nature and boundless strength to overcome repeated obstacles were a true reflection of the man he was. In his final years, he was surrounded by the tender care of his devoted wife, Kay, whose selfless love was his greatest blessing.
Left to cherish his memory and honor his legacy, besides his loving wife and best friend of 54 years, are his children, his sons: Scott and his wife, Laura of Farmington, Brett and his wife, Joanne of Southbury, Craig and his wife, Andrea of Cheshire; and his daughter, Kate Johnson and her husband, Jocquel of Woodbury. Pete and Kay were blessed with 8 beautiful grandchildren: Reagan, Kasey, Collin, Cara, Chris, Carter, Aniyah, and Shiloh who were one of their greatest joys, each of whom they adored and who loved them dearly in return.
The Thompson family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Edmund Quinn, whose kindness, patience, and genuine concern went far beyond medical care and brought peace to both Kay and Pete. In the past year, the Accent Hospice Care team provided wonderful care and support to Pete and his family. A special thank you to Pete's dearest friend and brother-in-law, Bill Reagan, for everything over the years. And a special acknowledgement to Pete's long-time friends for their regular visits while Pete was ill, as well as to Michela the Eucharist Minister who brought communion every week.
Funeral services for Mr. Thompson will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Midd-South Catholic Parish, Sacred Heart Church, Southbury. All those attending are kindly asked to meet at church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury.
