I'd like to share a story from the 1979 RIT 150th Anniversary Coast-Coast Relay Run, a dream of Pete's, produced by Pete, successful because of Pete and 11x other runners gifted the opportunity. (Pete was one of the 12x relay runners.)
I´m a proud member of the relay team. As overly ambitious as the relay was, Pete truly wanted to do it to call attention to RIT. It turned out to be an extremely rewarding team experience like no other, amplified by our success with powerful life lasting meaning for each of us. We truly came together as a team. Pete was our leader in more ways than one, our inspiration; his relentless drive was contagious. He ran as a member of the relay team. By no means was the relay easy and we experienced trying moments. One of those moments turned out to be pivotal in my opinion. We were somewhere in New Mexico, after approximately 4x days (of what would be 14x). We weren´t used to the grueling demands. I was experiencing headaches probably due to sleep deprivation or elevation or both. We were grumbling, perhaps a bit snippy like brothers. In my mind there was some doubt whether we could actually do this. For me, this was a low point. Pete had either heard or sensed negative vibes and called a team meeting. Pete pointedly asked us who we were doing the relay for. He wanted us to not think of him, but RIT. School spirit, what a thought. Without going into details, I don´t think we completely resolved anything in the moment, but perhaps most importantly it brought us together. I recall looking around and feeling like a team. It was a reckoning of sorts, in the middle of the New Mexico desert; if we´re going to do this, we´re going to do this as a team with all of us on the same page. Whether it was coincidental or a result of Pete´s method to his madness, within a day or so, we were in a groove with our abnormal 24/7 routine, and feeling better including more used to sleep intervals. We were totally reliant on each other. In many ways, I see that long extended running relay now as a reality human performance laboratory. By example and leadership, Pete gave us a forever lasting masterclass in devotion, loyalty, and team. I´m still following Pete and will forever do so.

"Following Pete"
Its early early Sunday
Going for a run, a feat
Left to my own devices
I´m still following Pete
I´m looping the "Sunset"
I´m not running "Industry"
And notably not hungover
But I´m still following Pete
A RF here, and a RF there
Hearing cries and laughter
One says, "They´re out there!"
And I´m still following Pete
Devotion, loyalty, sacrifice
Finding unfound school spirit
Still growing gratitude of team
RF, I´m still following Pete.

I travelled to the NCAA Division III National Championships with Pete (5 times). Each one was its own adventure. RF! In the picture, I´m in the middle, standing next to another All-American runner. One of the more memorable National Championships was when we got snowed in.

Judy,
I am sorry for your loss. Pete was a complex man, no doubt about it. He is a unique character that none of his athletes will ever forget. We owe him much. I have always said that Pete did an amazing job of forming bonds between "his men". These bonds endure and are the amazing legacy of his life.
I wish you Peace.

Pete was indeed a maverick. His legacy in many areas, but especially with RIT Cross-Country, Track and Field will be eternal.

Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you Bubba today and always. We were separated by 15 years (and one month!), and I was always so proud of my big brother, and all of his vast accomplishments. I love you and will miss you, but you´ll remain in my heart and prayers. So glad you were able to pass in the peace and comfort of our God. I also want to thank all of your friends and team members who visited you in the days before your passing. Wayne is wonderful and I´ll be forever grateful for his strength and dedication in working with Pete for so many years.
Love and go in peace Bubba,
Judy
