Peter Zepf Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2025.
Peter Donald Zepf, of Cocoa, Florida, formerly of Burnt Hills, New York, passed away on Wednesday February 19, 2025 at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida at the age of 71. He was born to Donald and Gladys Rasmussen Zepf on July 31, 1953 in Troy, NY and was raised in Speigletown, NY where he attended Lansingburgh High School and played on the track and soccer teams, graduating in 1971. He attended Hudson Valley Community College and SUNY Schenectady.

Peter started working at 15 years old pumping gas at Hugh Morgans Service Station in "The Burg". After college he worked at Ford Motor Company in Green Island, NY. When the plant closed in 1975 Peter joined the Marine Corps and served for four years as a Microwave Radio Technician. After basic training in Parris Island, SC, he was stationed at Twentynine Palms, CA, Biloxi, MS and Cherry Pointe, NC, attaining the rank of Sargeant. He also spent time at Camp Lejeune, NC, Norway, Denmark and Germany.

After his service, Peter worked for the Postal Service at the GMF in Albany, NY, retiring after 20 years. He then owned and operated a landscaping business in Burnt Hills, NY, where many of his customers became his friends. When Peter retired in 2018, he turned his business over to his son and would occasionally work with him just for the fun of it.

Peter and his wife were high school sweethearts, having met Jan in 1970, married in 1973, and enjoyed 51 years together. After living in Burnt Hills, NY for 40 years, they moved to Cocoa, Fl in 2021 and loved the sun, the surf and cruising out of nearby Cape Canaveral.

Peter "Papa" will be remembered most for his love of his family, his big heart and his wonderful sense of humor. Spending time with his children and his grandchildren was his favorite thing to do. Peter also enjoyed helping others whenever he was needed, whether it be his family, his friends, his customers, or the steady stream of shorter people who couldn't reach the higher shelves in the stores, he was always there to help. Most people will remember his dry humor as he brought laughter everywhere he went. Even at the end he had his family and the exceptional hospital staff laughing with his end-of-life jokes.

Survivors include his wife, Jan, his sons, Shaun Zepf (Kristen) and Tyler Zepf (Karly), his daughter, Sherrie DeMania, his granddaughter Ana Zepf, his grandsons, John Zepf, Ian Peter Zepf, Logan Dundon, Kyle DeMania and Conner DeMania. He is also survived by his sisters, Nancy Danish and Kristine Schermerhorn and his brother-in-law and lifelong friend, Bob Alpy.

Peter is predeceased by his parents, Don and Gladys Zepf, his brother Paul Zepf and his sister Carol McMillan.

At Peter's request, services will be private. He would rather you remember him with a funny story.

I loved Uncle Peter very much. If we all were as good at showing it as he was, it would be a better world. I'll miss him.

I remember Peter as being so so tall when I was a kid. Carole and I used to "borrow" his Beatles albums and listen to them while we played with Barbie´s. Such fun memories. I didn´t have a big brother so I was always in awe of him. RIP Peter. You were a giant to me when I was little.

Jan and family I am so sorry to hear of Peter´s death. He was my best friend and still is my best friend. I really haven´t seen him in a while but that doesn´t change our friendship. He´s the easiest going guy and he give you the shirt off his back his wife and him gave me a place to live when I was in dire need when I was going through a bed divorce and I´ll never forget that as long as I live I wish we came in contact, but I didn´t know that he moved out of the state and I didn´t know where he lived last time. I saw he was at his father`s house doing some yardwork. I´m very sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace love Pat and Bill

So sorry to hear. My story is, I was trying to talk Ron into letting me buy a mower and do the lawn myself. After weeks of lobbying he finally said yes; but, that very afternoon, I looked out the window and saw a man I later described as Jesus walking in our overgrown yard. (Ron had called him) I thought, I cannot say no to Jesus! We hired him and I was never sorry. A gentle, sweet man.
