Cain, Dr. Philip W.
Dr. Philip W. Cain, DPM, of Springfield, Ohio, passed away peacefully, with his children at his side, on August 30, 2025, at the age of 91.
He was born on June 30, 1934, in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of Dr. Richard and Florence (Delaney) Cain. He graduated from Cambridge High School then attended Ohio University where he majored in pre-med. He then enrolled at Ohio School of Chiropody in Cleveland, which would later become the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. While in school, he met Patricia Weindorf, a nurse from Erie, Pennsylvania. They fell in love and were married in Cleveland on July 3, 1959.
During his training in Cleveland, their first two children, Susan "Susie" and Philip "Jeff", were born. To support his young family, Dr. Cain worked nights on the railroad while completing his studies. After his residency, he joined the U.S. Army, and the family moved to Fort Polk, Louisiana, where their third child, Patrick, was born. He served as a Captain for four years in the medical clinic on base.
After completing his military service, Dr. Cain moved his family to Springfield, Ohio, where he remained for the rest of his life, raising his family, building, and later retiring from a thriving podiatry practice after 35 years of service. He was deeply respected and loved by his patients and colleagues for his professionalism, skill, and compassion.
Dr. Cain was also passionate about music. He was the last surviving founding member of the Springfield Banjo Band and an accomplished pianist. He shared his talents at hospitals, nursing homes, parties, and community events. Notably, he performed for President Ronald Reagan at a campaign stop in Columbus and for Governor Mike DeWine's Ice Cream Social on several occasions. He was a member of the Springfield Kiwanis and Elks Clubs.
For 31 years, he and his wife, Patty hosted the Mid-Winter Banjorama, bringing world-class banjo players to Springfield. A self-taught musician, he played several instruments by ear and delighted countless people with his music. In his later years, he could often be found playing piano while enjoying a steak and martini at his favorite restaurant, Cecil and Lime.
Dr. Cain also enjoyed many hobbies, including motorcycles, boating, travel, caricature art, handball, scuba diving, and swimming. In addition to his hobbies, he was very active in the Springfield Shrine Club, where he served as president.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan E. Sidner of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and his son, Dr. Philip J. Cain (Brenda) of Springfield, Ohio; beloved grandchildren, Michelle E. (Drew) Kupper of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Christine M. (Josh) Funk of Columbus, Ohio; Grace L. (Gavin) Coleman of Urbana, Ohio, Grant P.
