On November 9, 2025, Philip James Drossos passed away in his sleep due to heart complications. Phil was a strong character, who showed remarkable strength, kindness, and a connection to the natural world. A cherished son, brother, uncle, father and friend, Phil was truly a person loved by all.
Born in Salt Lake City on June 25th of 1976, Phil grew up as the second youngest in a family of four children. Phil spent his childhood learning, exploring, and playing hockey. A child who carried the love of nature deep in his heart, he spent much of his childhood and adolescence skiing, fishing, hiking, camping, and biking. His love for the natural environment later shaped his lifestyle and career.
Phil was a very strong hockey player. A captain and teammate, he devoted much of his time to being on the ice doing what he loved. Sometimes ending practice at midnight and starting again at 6am the next morning, Phil was admired by many for his resilience and strength.
Phil eventually moved to Alaska, where he felt most at peace. Stories such as bear encounters and moose incidents circled through his friends and family, leading them to both love the adventure and have a respect for nature. Phil became a land surveyor there, his true passion. He explored all areas, from small cities to rural towns with populations of under one hundred. "He showed us videos from when he kayaked up this massive river. It was just him and another guy, and they lived out there alone for like two months," his daughter recalls.
Phil met his wife, Allana, in Seward, Alaska. Their first child was born in April of 2010, and they remained in Alaska with their three cats until 2013, when they all moved to Costa Rica. Here their second child was born in May. Phil loved Costa Rica (despite the weather being opposite that of Alaska). He laughed when telling stories of a wallet going missing on a jungle ride, or when his three-year-old daughter fed a snake that was almost eight feet long. Phil made wonderful connections in Costa Rica and always remembered that time fondly.
Next Phil and Allana moved to Ashland Oregon with their two kids (and three cats). Laying roots, they lived in Oregon for the rest of Phil's life. Phil watched his children grow, as well as personally growing as a land surveyor. Co-owning 50% of a survey business, and eventually owning it all on his own, Phil was spoken extremely highly of by clients and coworkers alike. A kind, generous, and honest man, Phil was seen as a strong worker and even stronger person.
Above all, Phil cherished his family. He is survived by Allana, Scout and Sundew, his mother Berthana, and his siblings Francine, Andrea, and Samuel, in addition to countless nieces and nephews. A kind, loving father, he offered a deep love and a wisdom only a dad could carry. He will be dearly missed.
Those who knew Phil will remember him as a man of few words, but rather deep convictions. A caring, principled soul, who led by example rather than proclamations, Phil was a dearly beloved man. His death touched many, and he will be forever missed by those who knew and loved him. He left us far too soon.
There will be no memorial for Phil. However, a GoFundMe has been established for Allana, Scout, and Sundew. You can find it here: https://gofund.me/41e90fb6a
Phil will be remembered forever for his loyal, caring, and strong spirit. Leading an adventurous life, Phil will continue to be an inspiration for his children and others alike.
