It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Philip Andrew Hestand, aged 74, who departed this life on March 22, 2025. Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, on December 10, 1950, Philip lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a profound love for family and community. He resided in Paragould, Arkansas, where he touched countless lives through his work and passions.
Philip served his country honorably in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Taiwan during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he pursued a remarkable career in education and counseling, armed with his Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma, he served as the Director of the Counseling Center at Arkansas State University for over 20 years. He was also a passionate advocate for the field, having been appointed by two different governors to the Arkansas Board of Examiners and Counseling. As the former president of the Arkansas Counseling Association, he significantly contributed to the advancement of counseling services in the state. After his retirement, Philip continued to share his knowledge as an adjunct professor at Black River Technical College.
In addition to his professional achievements, Philip had a rich personal life. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 53 years, Mary Michelle Hestand, and a loving father to his daughters, Andrea and Jessica, and his son-in-law Phillip. Philip cherished family time and enjoyed creating lasting memories with his loved ones. His artistic spirit flourished in many ways, from playing guitar in the band "Blues Heavyweights" to playing praise and worship at his church, Westview Baptist Church, where he was a charter member and a Deacon.
Philip exemplified the spirit of lifelong learning, always eager to acquire new skills and knowledge. His insatiable curiosity drove him to explore a myriad of subjects, and he was often found with a book in hand, constantly seeking to expand his horizons. He had a talent for making jewelry, showcasing his creativity and craftsmanship. He also found joy in nature and hiking, relishing the beauty of the outdoors.
Philip is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Mary Michelle Hestand; daughters, Andrea and Jessica (Phillip Ward) Hestand; brother, Barry Hestand; sisters, Carla (Doran) Gregory and and Rebecca (Johnny) Thurman; 3 aunts; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends- including his friends from the 1968 class at Paragould High School. He leaves behind a legacy of love, knowledge, and compassion that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents, John Hestand and Eula Faye Hestand.
Public visitation will be held at Heath Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, beginning at 12:00 PM. A memorial service celebrating Philip's life will follow at 1:00 PM, with Bro Ronnie Winn officiating. All who wish to honor his memory are invited to join the family in paying tribute to a remarkable man who impacted many lives through his tireless devotion to education, counseling, and the arts.
In Philip's memory, the family encourages donations to Westview Baptist Church or The Gideons International, organizations that were dear to Philip's heart.
Philip Andrew Hestand will be deeply missed but will live on in the memories and stories shared by his family and friends.
