Philip Murray Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pulliam Funeral Home - Robinson on Jan. 7, 2026.
Mr. Philip J. Murray, known affectionately to all as Philip, was called home to his eternal rest on January 5, 2026, after many months of failing health. Born on a crisp autumn day on October 31, 1940, in Robinson Township, Crawford County, IL, he lived a life marked by devotion to his family, his faith, and the land he so dearly loved. Philip's journey on this earth concluded in the same community where it began.
Philip graduated from Robinson High School in 1958, his youthful spirit and determination setting the stage for a life of hard work and meaningful connections. He was a proud member of Local 157, Plumbers and Steamfitters, in Terre Haute, IN, dedicating 35 years to a craft that not only required skilled hands but also a heart for service. Beyond the confines of his trade, Philip was a respected Crawford County Farmer and Livestock Producer, nurturing hogs, cattle, and row crops with the same care and attention he gave to his family and friends.
A man of deep Christian faith, Philip wove the love of God into every aspect of his life. His voice, once harmonizing in the Murray Brother's Quartet, continued to resonate the joy and humor he found in his beliefs. He was a former Board Member of the Crawford County Farm Bureau and the Crawford County Fair. Philip had a long and successful career showing pigs at many county and state fairs making many memories and friends along the way. He was also a lifelong 4-H Leader and supporter, Philip's commitment to his community was as steadfast as his commitment to his morning ritual at MAXWELL HOUSE CAFE and the camaraderie found among his fellow HARDEES' COFFEE CLUB members. It was there, over cups of steaming coffee, that Philip often heard "the rest of the story," wit and wisdom leaving a mark on all who had the pleasure of his company.
Philip's life was a testament to the values of kindness, thoughtfulness, and handiness. As an old time farmer, he could fix anything with baling wire and duct tape.
Left to cherish Philip's memory is his beloved wife, Caroline (Bell) Murray; his devoted children and their spouses, Tim and Paula Murray, Mrs. Janie (Arthur) Baker, and Mrs. Amy (Jason) Hartke; his grandchildren and their spouses, Robbie and Jenifer Martin, Nick and BreAnne Martin, Brooke and Steve Mueckl, Zach and Kelly Murray, Jillian Baker, Curtis and Cassidy Baker, Katie Hartke and Joe Hartke; and his precious seven great-grandchildren. His legacy also lives on through the many nieces and nephews who will continue to look up to the man who set such a sterling example of living with joy and purpose.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Henry E. and Hazel Lee (Skidmore) Murray, and his brothers, Byron, H.E. "Junior," David, John and Paul Murray, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms into a heavenly chorus befitting a former quartet member.
Today, as we reflect on the life of Mr. Philip J. Murray, let us remember a man who walked this earth with the lightness of humor and the strength of character. He has left us with memories as rich as the soil he tended and as sweet as the coffee he savored. Though he will be dearly missed, we take solace in knowing that Philip is now sharing stories and laughter in Heaven.
Funeral Services for Mr. Philip J. Murray will be conducted on Friday January 9, 2026, at Pulliam Funeral Home in Robinson, with Pastor Brady Hall officiating. Interment will follow funeral in the New Robinson Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday January 8, 2026, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Pulliam Funeral Home where stories and memories of Philip will abound.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Crawford County 4-H Extension in tribute to Philip's many years as a 4-H Leader and his dedication to learning about agriculture. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.
