Philip EVERHART Obituary

HAMPTON - Philip "Phil" E. Everhart Sr., was called home on Aug. 20, 2010, at the age of 82.
Phil came to live on the Peninsula in 1954 after he graduated from Virginia Tech taking a position as an aeronautical engineer with NACA where he remained a loyal employee until his retirement in 1989 from the NASA Langley Scout Project Office. Phil also proudly served in the Marines from 1946-1948 and again from 1950-1951.
Phil is preceded in death by his daughter, Lynne E. Brannon; sister, Claire L. Everhart (East); grandson, Luke M. Everhart; and parents, Ruth and Edward Everhart.
Phil was an active member of many civic organizations where he freely contributed countless hours and effort to become a more useful instrument of God. He was a member and chairperson of the Hampton Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities since its inception 21 years ago. He was honored by this group with the creation the Philip Everhart Youth Award, awarded annually to two young people in need. Being an active member of the Exchange Club of Wythe since 1989, he also served numerous terms as its president. Also since retirement, he was a member of the Hampton Branch Board of the YMCA; president of the Riverdale Civic Association; the Hampton Child Protection Team; Peninsula Center for Independent Living; and many more local organizations.
Phil was a faithful servant as a member of Hampton Baptist Church since 1955, where he generously supported its work and membership. He was Chairman of the Premises Committee, Sunday School teacher, Director of the Young Adult Sunday School Department, Deacon, Chairman of the Restoration Committee, and was a youth leader.
Phil is survived by his loving and caring wife of 60 years, Lucille Munden Everhart; four devoted sons, Phil Jr., and wife, Lynn, Wayne and wife, Kerstin, Bruce and wife, Jeanne, David and wife, Shiryl; son-in-law, Rick and wife, Pam; and his sister, Claire's children, Sharon Livingston, Judy Reeves, and Larry East, whom Phil considered his children too. He is survived by 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous extended family and friends who were an integral part of his life.
Phil was known for his love of family and devotion to his community. He worked tirelessly for the rights of others by speaking out for those most in need and was a great inspiration to those whose lives he touched. He strongly believed in the power of love and the necessity of commitment and lived his life accordingly.
A celebration of Phil's life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, at Hampton Baptist Church. Interment will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at Lakeview Cemetery in Blackstone, Va.
The family requests that in honor of Phil, contributions be made to Hampton Baptist Church, 40 Kings Way Hampton, VA 23669, 723-0707, or to the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad, 47015 Buxton Back Road, Buxton, NC, 27920, 252-995-5490.

I remember Mr. Everhart as a central figure in Riverdale, as was the entire Everhart family... especially at the pool. I think everyone knew at least one of the Everharts and where they lived. I was saddened to learn from my mother and sister today that he had passed. My sincerest sympathies for the loss of such a beloved husband and father, you are all in my prayers.

Dear Everhart Family
I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Everharts passing. Just like everyone in Riverdale I grew up with the Everharts. I think as a teenager I spent more evenings having dinner at your house than I did at my own house.
I'm currently out of state and will not be able to attend. My thoughts and prayers will be with each of you at this difficult time.
I love you guys.

Dear Everhart Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Phil was a special friend to our family. A source of care and support during our time at Hampton Baptist Church. The morning Jay had his heart procedure at Riverside Hospital, Phil came. At a time when I was scared and alone he was there. It meant so much. Thinking of you all and praying for you during this time.

In my lifetime I had the pleasure of meeting each member of the Everhart family and I have fond memories of the times I have spent with each of you. Although I went to school and graduated with Lynne, I became closest to Wayne after High School. Wayne and I have shared a close friendship for many years. I want to extend my deepest sympathy to Mrs. Everhart, Phil, Wayne, Bruce and David and all of your family members on the passing of Mr. Everhart. I pray for God's comfort to be with each and everyone of you during this sad time. May you find comfort and peace with each other in the days ahead as you share your favorite memories of him with each other. I know Lynne was waiting with open arms to great her Dad. Peace be with you.

August 21, 2010

Dear Everhart Family,
My mom, Pat Behrens called me this morning and told of Mr. Everharts' passing. I remember him as a great person as teenager hanging out with David and as an adult on the Riverdale Recreation Association board. I always appreciated the amount of hard work he put into making his neighborhood a better place to live for everybody else. Although I hadn't seen him in quite a few years the most important thing I remember was that he was always concerned about everybody elses well being, whether it be Riverdale pool or the wetlands surrounding it or the neighborhood in general.

David, I am very sorry for your loss.

August 21, 2010

I am pleased to have assisted Phil in the Scout Office for a number of years. He was always thoughtful, considerate, and sensitive to others.
Lucille, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Grace Girton, Newport News, Va

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. I am currently out of town and unable to attend. Wish I could be there.

August 21, 2010

Lucille, Boys and families,
I knew Phil for over 45 years. He was the most wonderful friend, co-worker, and committee member a person could ever hope to have. Phil was a strong advocate of the handicapped - a very active member of the Hampton Mayor's Committee for Disabled. He did so much to advance the cause of the disabled. He was very active in civic clubs, neighborhood organizations but most of all he was a true friend.
Thank you for sharing him with us.
The last three years have been rough but he endured them with dignity. Now he has gone on to eternal rest in heaven.
Love, Barbara Cubbage
