Philip Scott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Clements Funeral & Cremation Services - Hillsborough on Jan. 29, 2026.
Philip Scott a resident of 1911 Front Street, Durham passed away 28 January 2026 after a 6 month battle with cancer. His loyal companion for over 40 years, Shinya Tokuyasu survives along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and family members which are the offspring of his 6 siblings who grew up together on Margret Lane in = Hillsborough NC.

He is predeceased by His mother and father Clyde and Emily Scott of Hillsborough. His wife Ellen Craig Scott of Orange County; Edna Haithcock (Worth) Hillsborough; Doris Paschall (Felts) Durham; Melvin Scott (Betty) Hillsborough; Janet Wells (Robert) Burlington; Roland Scott (Lou)Hillsborough; Hilda Swainey (Carl) Tega Cay, SC.

"Uncle Philip" kept his large and far ranging family which originated on Margaret Lane Hillsborough together. He was our family historian tracing our ancestors back to the time of the Revolutionary War in the States and even further to our European roots. When a grandchild, great grandchild, or great great grandchildren were born to Clyde and Emily, Philip documented that and added them to the family tree. At this count well over 110 of us affectionally refer to him as "Uncle Philip". He attended many family gatherings all over the southeast United States. He was the family's grand baker. Gifted in the art of pastries, pies, and cakes. Most of us have enjoyed his skills. Additionally he was a kind man, a generous man, a man cherished by his large family.

Philip Scott was a man of letters. During his working career he worked for publishing companies like McGraw Hill. He wrote opinion columns for Durham and Hillsborough papers. He was a conservative citizen of the Old North State, and a lover of all things UNC Chapel Hill. UNC, his alma matter was always dear to his heart. But people and principals were always intertwined with his thought and writings.

Philip spoke transparently of his relationship with Jesus as his Savior. Because of this many who call him "Uncle Philip" look to see him again. Grace and Peace Philip Dotson Scott. You lived a blessed and long life and now you join your family in God's eternal kingdom.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 6th at Clements Funeral Chapel in Hillsborough. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.

The family is being assisted by Clements Funeral & Cremation Services, Inc. in Hillsborough. Online condolences may be sent to www.clementsfuneralservice.com.
