Philip Baird Smith, "Phil" to everyone who knew him, passed away unexpectedly on February 28, 2026. Born April 18, 1961 in
Lompoc, California,
Phil was the second of four children born to Robert and Georgia Smith. In 1967, following the aerospace business, Phil and the family relocated to
Titusville, Florida. Phil spent the rest of his life in the Titusville – Mims area. He attended Apollo Elementary, Jackson Junior High and graduated from Titusville High School. Phil was active in sports growing up including football and softball until injuries caught up to him and he shifted his attention to his lifelong love of horses, boating, motorcycles and any number of other things that grabbed his attention along the way – there was always something!
In the early eighties, Phil followed in his father's footsteps and began working at the Kennedy Space Center during the early days of the space shuttle program and remained there until his untimely passing. In the late eighties he met the love of his life Carol. They married outdoors in 1990 at Fox Lake Park with a full complement of hay bales, a horse drawn carriage and tons of friends and family in attendance. Carol brought Philip more than just love, she brought along two children, Jodi and Leo, which Phil treated as his own and you'd have never known otherwise.
In addition to hobbies, family and friends, Phil had a lifelong passion for Dallas Cowboy's football. If they were playing, you knew where he was at and where to find him.
While probably the quietest of the Smith clan, to his friends and family, Phil was somebody you could always count on. Whether it was a small task or a big one, whether family, friend or co-worker, he was always there to lend a hand – and if you were really special, he'd fry your Thanksgiving turkey for you - all you had to do was come to the house with a beer in hand and you'd get one of the best turkeys to be had.
Phil was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife Carol; her two children Jodi Nixon Anderson and Leo Brennan; siblings Robin, Wesley and Stephanie; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by all he touched along the way. A true celebration of life – done "Phil's Way" – will be held at a date yet to be determined. Carol and the entire family look forward to seeing you there.
